The Big Four
These are the prime time guys and the chances are, no matter how little you know about tennis, you’ve heard of at least one of them. They’re the players you’re most likely to read about, hear discussed, see win tournaments, or even see at all, as their matches always get top billing. Especially against each other.
Throughout history, tennis has always had standout players; one or two who become the most successful players of a particular time period. What tennis has never seen is domination like this group has had over the past decade.
The number of records broken and milestones reached by these four men is ridiculous. No one outside of this group has held the world no.1 ranking since January 2004, and together they’ve won 36 of the last 39 Grand Slams, 70 of the last 82 Masters titles and 9 of the last 11 World Tour Finals. Their record at the Olympics is much less impressive though, winning only 4 of the 9 singles medals awarded in their period of dominance.
Commentators will probably ask two main questions about the Big Four:
Is their success because they’re that much better than everyone who’s played in the past, because the rest of the guys are worse than the rest of the guys in the past, or a combination of the two?
With the threats of age and injuries catching up with them, how long have they got left?
