ONE OK ROCK “Field Of Wonder” Concert Translation
The anon from a few days ago asking what was said during the concert made me consider actually translating it. Luckily enough, it was fairly easy to understand! I wonder if I may be bending the rules a little too much with this one, but on the FOW website they only state that the distribution of picture and audio material is prohibited, so fingers crossed. I skipped through the concert, so it may be possible that I missed some tiny adlibs.
Important: I’m no Japanese or English native, therefore there might be translation errors in this as well as odd grammatical structures. Please also take into account that since I had to rely solely on my listening skills for this one, it may be possible that I misheard one thing or two. Apologies for that.

AAAAAAAAAA
I couldn't put my finger on why I'm so wary of "Eye Of The Storm", but I think I've figured it out. The overall message I get from the album is a confused, whiny, and defensive "It's not me; it's you". But it also feels like a sort of last ditch effort to save a relationship, from someone who isn't entirely sure what they want - so, ironically, an album about making the effort to change is from someone who doesn't particularly feel inclined to (presumably because they seem really tired).
I would LOVE to go into further depths about the meaning of the album, maybe even each song, but the truth is that I don’t even know half of the song titles, let alone the lyrics. It’s just not my tune. :/ Don’t feel like saying much about what I dislike about it either for I think the problems “older” fans have with this product are obvious and can be read about everywhere.
But this is a very nice interpretation, I think! ((and somwhat ironic because didn’t Taka’s ex broke up with him some time last year LOL))
Have to admit: I know next to nothing about their personal lives, but, if that’s true, then I can see how that breakup heavily influenced this album, since Taka seems to be the main songwriter on it. Also makes me wish that they’d taken a bit longer to create the album, ‘cause they do seem emotionally exhausted - both live and in studio.
I’m like you, though: it’s not really my cup of tea, which is a shame, ‘cause I did want to like it… But I don’t - and that’s coming from someone who could be considered a “newer” fan.
I think the breakup happened after the album released, but from what I heard there have been tensions throughout their relationship too so hm yeah, perhaps this influenced parts of the lyrics. But then again, only the parties involved will actually know what happened, this is none of my business.
Tbvh eots was obviously only written to generate attention and money. The songs sound generic, can be played on the radio and have melodies that are meant to be stuck in your head for days. Also, looking at the song lengths alone (that are ridiculously short) shows that they were targetting the online streams with this album since an artist gets a certain amount of money per stream, and short songs, obviously, get repeated more often than long ones. But I guess that’s nowadays’ music scene to you.
But I know what you mean! I surprisingly found myself to like most of the Ambitions songs when the album released, although it was far away from the sound they had when I started listening to them. The songs weren’t per se original, but they were fun at least, both live and on the record. Eots (from the two times I’ve listened to it) mostly feels soulless and, stealing your words, emotionally exhausted. And even live I cannot shake off the feeling that Taka and the other members are restricted in performing those songs. While they can go full out when performing bangers like KKD or Re:make, there’s not much to do, even for the audience, when they play sofi or Wasted Nights.
Oh, same - I’m not interested in prying into their personal business.
Yeah, it’s a shame that they went for quantity over quality, ‘cause they’re very much capable of doing better. It’s no surprise that the whole album has a different feel, though, since they had so many people working on each song. However, I think the difference is also due to being influenced by Queen, who are/were a very different band, so the end result feels unnatural for OOR - which is probably one of the reasons why they seem so restricted when performing.
I’m just very curious to see how they will perform on their next record. Whether they will go back to rock, and if yes, if it will sound genuine. Because I fear they may have lost track of their original sound by now, not least because the music industry and what’s considered “trendy” and “suitable for the market” has changed so much from the last time they released something heavy. I just wonder if a sound like JinseixBoku= would sell as well today as it had in 2013.
Honestly speaking, what I’m expecting from their next record is something that would be considered rock but that doesn’t necessarily sound much different from other western rock artists, but only time can tell.
I think that would, in part, depend on whether or not they’re allowed to use Japanese (which I think is their USP over here), since I don’t know if that’s included in their contract with Fuelled By Ramen. I know they want to include more English, but I think one of the problems with that is that it normally has to include a lot of rhyming, which can be rather limiting. But I do think another JinseixBoku would sell relatively well, since it was well written, and western markets are now more open to music in other languages (if Kpop is anything to go by, anyway).
That said, I don’t have much in the way of expectations for their next album, which is probably for the best.
I had the opportunity to ask Taka about the lack of Japanese lyrics on the international 35xxxv version when it released and he said that it was one their international label’s terms of contract that he was only allowed to sing in English. At that time they were still signed with Warner Music but I imagine the conditions with Fuelled By Ramen to be more or less the same. I just find this whole Japanese/English version thing to be a big joke in general tbh, since they started translating from English into Japanese with Ambitions. Might just stick to the original English lyrics instead of translating two lines and calling it a Japanese version but that’s just my opinion lol
But you might be right about JxB, now that I think about it. The international market has indeed become more open to non-English music, and recent events show that the emo music scene is anything but dead too. And yes, better don’t have high hopes for what’s about to come, just wait and see.
Eh? What’s the point in being only allowed to sing in English? What did they think would happen; we’d all start learning a new language? Oh noooo! Actually, I suspect that it’s got more to sustaining the status quo, and being adverse to taking a risk, which makes one wonder why OOR signed with them in the first place, if they have to change so much. And you’re right: having just two lines in Japanese is a joke, though I suppose that’s the best compromise their Japanese label could come up with.
Idk, I assume at that time they really wanted to enter the Western market and therefore accepted all the conditions, and the people they were negotiating with probably made big promises, saying that English only sells better etc? But on the brighter side of things, Taka’s been shading here and there on their international activities in Japanese interviews, so he’s obviously aware of what’s happening. Lowkey waiting until their contract with FBR ends (assume they’ll have to release 3 albums) so they can buy their freedom again lol
As much as I'd Like to contribute to the conversation, now I'm just privy on who the ex was.
What am I but the butt of my parents' mistakes.
