‪November the 4th. I f*cking hate this day. I really do. In the past, when this day would creep up, I always tried to prove it to myself, and others, that I was over it. That I could move on. That I will not break down, lose my mind, become a hermit, or let my sadness overwhelm my future. Some years I succeed. Some years I fail. Epically.‬ ‪ ‪Mainly because I never got to say good-bye. I didn’t get to prepare to say good-bye like I fantasized losing a parent would be. It was sudden. Happened in a blink of an eye. One minute he was here, the next he was gone.‬ ‪ ‬ ‪Eight years later and I still can’t imagine living in a world without my father. How am I doing it? Am I doing it? Am I surviving? Or am I merely getting by? Most days it feels like the latter. He was an amazing man. Is it weird that to me, he STILL is an amazing man?! An astounding Muslim, a GOD-fearing, GOD-loving, humble, self-less, explosively loving father. He was the ground I walked on. He taught me everything that I needed to be who I am today. He is the reason I am a mother today. He made all things possible and he cared deeply about every. Single. Person. He Ever Met.‬ ‪ ‬ ‪My father, Ismail Idris, died eight years ago today. May Allah shower him with mercy in his grave. May Allah gracefully open heaven’s doors to him. He took his beautiful wife of 18 years, Halima, with him. He took my then 13-year-old brother Imran with him. He took my beautiful Auntie Nijat with him. Allah (swt) took them all on ONE day. Eight years later, I understand, death is not about the ones that go… Death, grief, is about the ones they leave behind. And what we do with this unspeakable pain that will live forever. Prayer Request! My mother is travelling to Saudi Arabia today. First time in 33+ years. What’s wild about this is that, she’s travelling because of the new open-door policy Saudi Arabia has announced. You can receive a visa on arrival in the country for the first time ever. (I wish my dad was alive to see this) Most people don’t know this about me, but I was born in the capital city Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1982. I went back in Spring of 2000 for the first time since I was a toddler. I did umrah as a teenager in the holy city of Makkah, I visited Madinah. I also was fortunate to meet my mother’s half-sisters that were living in Jeddah. And for years I attempted to go back to my birthplace but couldn’t travel there because of the countries distain for foreigners. NOW, Today, my mother is going back. She has two older sisters that have always lived there. One of them died two years ago. The other is sick now and fighting for her life. September 27, 2019 the country has allowed any foreign passport holders (especially US citizens) a visa on arrival, that last for 90 days. My mother, a week since this law has been in effect, is travelling to Saudi to see her older sister. “I had to hear about my sister Amuna dying without seeing her for thirty years. I am going now to see my sister before she meets the same fate. I’m going back to where it all started for me as a woman. After 33 years.” She will go to see her sister. The country where she became a mom. And she will do umrah in Makkah. Wish my mom a safe trip, and an even safer return. When able, I try to dismiss ignorance and not internalize the nonsense. Unfortunately, I’m unable at this moment … My husband and I are very conscious parents who think things through (even down to the smallest detail) when it comes to our child… We always like to make sure that our decisions are in line with our way of life; Islam. Our biggest priority is to raise Ayah with a great understanding and appreciation for what it means to be a good Muslim. A big part of that is tolerance, acceptance. That even though we don’t believe that Santa exist, or that Dec 25 is Jesus’s birthday…, the people we love do… So we celebrate with them. Just like we ask them to celebrate Eid with us. What is wrong with that? Any excuse to be with family, to laugh together… eat together, enjoy one another is a BLESSING, a gift that should be cherished.! Ayah is so fortunate and blessed because she comes from a very loving, accepting, diverse HUGE family… and as Muslims we aren’t here to tell others what to believe, or how to live. We are here to worship Allah (swt), to lead by example (inshaAllah), to treat all people with respect, and dignity..>!
