In a way, you can argue that everyone ever born is kind of a product of their time, in the sense that as social and scientific developments pop up and change how we see the world, we change as a society and raise the following generations accordingly. To be completely honest, I feel like a modern AU for the Amnesia: Justine characters would be largely the same in a lot of major aspects - they’d have the same careers and basic personalities in the modern era, for example. But on the other hand, growing up with modern technology, media, health care, social issues, etc. would definitely have an impact on how they grew up and what kind of views they developed in adulthood. But you didn’t come here for a long-winded philosophy rant, so I’ll get on with the headcanons now. Under a cut because this is gonna be long.
Justine and Monsieur Florbelle
Justine and her father are tricky - I’ve been thinking and rethinking how a modern AU would work with them for over an hour now. I imagine that instead of isolating Justine to study her mysterious mental illness, in a modern setting Monsieur Florbelle would likely recognize whatever disorder she has and instead go to the extreme to treat it, rather than study it. Keeping her isolated from her peers ‘for her safety and theirs’ would likely be a part of this, as well as experimental medications and methods of behavioral therapy. Not to mention giving her an inferiority superiority complex by talking about his late wife’s ‘blinding beauty.’ From here, however, things get muddier.
In a modern setting, seeing the daughter of a maid and the young lady of the house playing together wouldn’t be as taboo as back in the 1800s, so I imagine Justine and Clarice be just as close as in canon, if not closer. The difficulty would come when Monsieur Florbelle starts isolating Justine in order to try and treat her. Justine would definitely sneak away to play with Clarice anyway, though both of them would get in trouble afterwards.
And after a lot of thought, I imagine Justine wouldn’t end up killing her father in this AU, since the event leading up to that in canon was a result of her trying to provoke a response from him and ending up humiliated and furious. Considering the different context, it probably wouldn’t play out the same way.
In present day, Justine is... honestly, not much different personality-wise. Smug, condescending, feels like she’s above the law. So not a whole lot different from other modern rich people, really. She’s the type who posts a mix of dramatic selfies and artistically shot pictures of crowds, scenery, and random objects on social media. However, instead of torturing people in her basement, I feel like she’s the more likely to browse some of the disturbing websites you can find on the deep web, and has probably secured an invite to a red room stream or two.
As a side note, she’s definitely experimented with drugs and different medications. I imagine it’s mainly hallucinogens, but again, she’s experimented.
Meanwhile, her father is still alive and well, but very concerned with her behavior. He definitely doesn’t know the extent of her... activities on the internet, but he can guess it’s not exactly legal.
Clarice
She’s still Justine’s maid in this AU, but because of the modern setting I imagine she has significantly more freedom than in canon. While her an Justine are still close friends, she’d have a social life outside of the Florbelle Estate and other friends she can talk to. She’s not super tech savvy, but she can work her phone and a computer, so she gets by fine.
Like in canon, I imagine she doesn’t know the kind of screwed up things Justine is getting up to when no one’s watching. Or at the very least, she suspects something but doesn’t want to think about it because they’re friends.
Alois
Being a tennis player, it’d be easy to write Alois off as a sort of charismatic jock archetype - handsome, athletic, charming - but underneath all that there’d still be that jealous, temperamental undercurrent to his personality. He’d have had several past relationships, some being not quite as serious as he would’ve liked to think, but I imagine at least a few of them ended because the other party felt he was too jealous and clingy.
With him being naturally social and easily swayed, he’d be the type to be super active on social media, post a lot of dorky selfies on Instagram, and jump onto all the latest bandwagons. If you’ve heard a stupid conspiracy theory on the internet (McDonald’s using kangaroo meat, pigeons are government surveillance drones, etc.), he’s the guy who definitely believed it for at least a week, even if he’ll deny it afterwards. I can also see him binging cute romantic comedies on Netflix.
As an athlete, he’d probably have a lot of fans, especially with his social media presence. He’d be humble on the surface but definitely basking in the attention on the inside.
Basile
Basile is the one who’d probably be the least changed by a modern setting. He’d still be a stubborn, temperamental working class carpenter. In terms of modern technology, he’s the type to have a cheap flip phone that he uses almost exclusively for work, and he probably wouldn’t be very good with computers.
Honestly, I wish there was more to say about Basile in this AU, but there really isn’t. He’s more or less the same as in canon.
Malo
Oh boy, Malo. He’s definitely the one who’d change the most in a modern AU. I can easily imagine him being the type to dye his hair crazy colors, post a lot of selfies online, retweet memes, etc. He’d still be a violinist, but I can also see him being interested in EDM, genre fusions, and maybe more experimental types of music too. Of the three suitors, I can see him being the best with technology. He’s no hacker, but he can find his way around most websites.
Along with Justine, he’s probably also experimented with drugs, but he’s generally more inclined towards liquor.
In general I headcanon him as bi, but in the modern era he’d be much more open about it.

Okay, so! I’ve been gone a really long time, and I’m sorry for that. My muse for Amnesia: Justine disappeared for awhile and so did I. But that muse has come back now and I think I’m ready to continue this blog again! Re: my last post, since Tumblr doesn’t seem to be able to detect text post stuff very well I don’t think it’ll be as much of a problem as I thought it would. So I’m going to try and stay on here. We’ll see how it goes.
There’re some asks that’ve been sitting in my askbox for... awhile now (sorry!) that I’m gonna work on getting to (even though the season for many of them has long passed... oops), and a draft for a longer answer I was stuck on for awhile that I’m gonna get to work on again. Also, I have a sort of fanfic project I’m working on, and I hope I can show it to you guys pretty soon!
All that said, I’m still accepting requests, and hopefully I’ll be a bit better at getting to them this time around ^^;
What will happen with this blog in light of the whole tumblr banning thing going on? Will it be shut down or moved somewhere else? I need my amnesia fix :(
I want to continue this blog here, I really do. But I have too many things to say about these characters that, uhhhh, doesn’t necessarily fit in with the direction this website is going, if you catch my drift. I need a place for my thoughts about these characters, so it definitely won’t be shutting down permanently! But I’m definitely going to have to figure out a new arrangement.
What I’d like to do it keep this blog up, but cross-post everything someplace else where more explicit content is allowed as well. So this blog would effectively become the ‘censored’ version where nsfw topics aren’t discussed (at least not in detail), and the other place would be the ‘uncensored’ version that has everything on it, nsfw and all. But on the other hand, that would be a lot more work and it would make things more difficult to keep up with. Plus I’m not sure if linking to nsfw content will get the blog as a whole flagged and deleted, so I’m also considering just picking up and going elsewhere completely and leaving this blog as a kind of archive with a link to the new place. As for where this will be… I haven’t decided yet.
Pillowfort.io seems promising, but right now you have to pay to get on there and I understand not everyone will be able to do that, so I’m considering it more of a backup plan if all else fails. AO3 is… kind of an option? It’s super ideal to run a blog-like structure from, but using it to organize/archive headcanons and drabbles it wouldn’t be a terrible option.
There’re also two more options I’m looking into. Namely, Discord and Amino. It’s not really the same format, but it would be a nice place for us Amnesia: Justine fans to gather without having to worry about censorship/everything getting deleted out of nowhere because tumblr flagged something wrong or whatever.
tl;dr I’m almost certainly moving the blog elsewhere (at least partially) and I’m looking into some options (namely Pillowfort, AO3, Discord, and Amino), but whatever ends up happening I’ll keep you guys posted!

In a modern AU, what horror movies would the suitors like the most? Which horror movie villains would scare them the most?

- For reasons even I don’t entirely understand, I feel like Alois would be a sucker for found-footage horror flicks like Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Something that looks like it could’ve really happened would get to him in a way other things wouldn’t. As for what horror villain would scare him the most, that would probably go to Norman from Don’t Breathe. Everything about that man would creep him out.
- Somehow I feel like Basile would watch slasher flicks like Friday the 13th, Halloween, or A Nightmare on Elm Street - formulaic, slightly campy at times, but entertaining. The villain that would freak him out the most would probably be the thing from It Follows. Watching a movie like that would make him paranoid and jumpy for weeks to come, even if he’d complain about how stupid he thought the premise of a sexually transmitted demon curse was.
- Malo would be the one with a more varied taste in horror films, but the things that would attract him most would be movies with high tension and/or a twist ending. I can imagine things like The Descent, A Quiet Place, and The Cabin in the Woods being favorites of his. Somehow I get the sense that the movie 'villain’ that would mess with him the most would be the mirror from Oculus. Something that can warp your perception of reality and bend you to its will like that would make him super uncomfortable.
Other than the monsters that the suitors got tortured into being, what kind of classic Halloween monster would suit each one?

- Alois was the hardest for me to figure out, but in the end I feel like he’d be a witch/wizard, for the simple reason that I could imagine him trying to brew a love potion ^^;
- Basile works pretty well as a werewolf in my mind, mainly because he matches the whole ‘big, strong, hairy, angry’ vibe. I don’t have much more of a justification for this, Basile is just very much A Werewolf to me.
- I thought Malo would’ve been the easiest in this category, but thinking about it there’re two things that could fit him really well - a vampire, or a ghoul. Vampire would work because the typical ‘smug yet classy’ vibe of a vampire really fits him, but a ghoul is more thematically appropriate because, y’know. They eat people. If I really had to choose I guess I’d go with vampire for him though, drinking blood is close enough to eating human flesh in my book.
I accidentally got into a new fandom and am currently drowning in it, so I ended up losing inspiration for this blog. I will be back, but it might be a little while. Sorry! I have a few asks drafted that I’m trying to work on when I can. I just need some time to be able to get back into the characters’ heads.

Yep :’) I haven’t done much on here lately but it’s mostly because life has been kicking my ass for months on end. I have a few things I’m working on in my drafts though, so hopefully I’ll be putting out more content soon!!
What are some of your general headcanons for Alois and his family?
Alois
- He’s not much of an alcohol person, unlike the other two suitors. He’ll have a glass of wine every now and then, but it’s rare for him to get truly drunk.
- A lot of the time, he takes people and places at face value, without really trying to look past much (i.e. seeing Justine only for the playful, lovely woman she presented herself as, seeing Basile as ‘strong and violent’ and Malo as simply ‘talented’, etc.). It’s partly because he was raised that way, partly because he’s just a bit dense.
- While normally a very kind and almost docile person, it’s worth remembering that he has a jealous, temperamental streak to him. He offered to poison and/or kill Basile if Justine wished, after all, and it’s likely he offered to do the same or similar to Malo. It can be argued that Justine manipulated him into doing all that, but he is the one who wrote her the letter offering to do those things and trying to convince her he loved her more than the others did.
- He’s kind of a prude. In his mind, the only exposed skin on a person should be the arms (sometimes) and from the neck up, and sex is something that should only happen between people who truly love each other - and this goes for men and women. The kinds of things people wear nowadays, for example, would make him very flustered and uncomfortable.
- He unconsciously craves and seeks out physical contact, especially from a lover. He’s very much the type to pretty much constantly have a hand on his lover, be it their shoulder, or arm, or back, or just holding their hand. None of it is intentional, it just sort of happens.
His Family
- His family is fairly well-off, and they have connections with some respectable people,but they’re a bit more in the range of upper-middle class than nobility or the aristocracy.
- His parents are very supportive of what he does and what he wants in life, but they (particularly his mother) worry about him getting involved with people who would treat him poorly coughcoughJUSTINEcoughcough.
- He has two younger sisters, both of whom are very sweet but kind of naive. He’s very protective of them, and is nervous at the prospect of either of them being courted, for fear that they could end up with someone who treats them badly or takes advantage of them. A little ironic, considering.
- His parents married for love, and he grew up idealizing their relationship and romance in general. Kind of like a Prince Charming sort of situation, he wants to find someone who loves him and that he loves as much as his parents love each other.
- His family is actually fairly large overall. He has a handful of aunts and uncles and several cousins on both his mother’s side and his father’s, and he even has a couple of first cousins once removed (i.e. his cousins’ children) whom he adores, despite not seeing them often.
Sooooooo does the mun of the blog have any pairings they ship in Amnesia Justine ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ???
Tbh I ship all of them with happiness and good mental health, but that’s probably not what you’re wanting to hear about x’)
The main thing I ship is Justine/Clarice, mostly because I’m an absolute SUCKER for childhood-friends-to-lovers situations, and ships with a master/servant dynamic on the surface, and ‘could actually kill you’/pure cinnamon roll ships, and ships where person A and person B have contrasting personalities... so basically it was inevitable I’d end up shipping this :’) I can see them as having a really interesting dynamic, especially since Justine’s soul journal entry about Clarice is the only canonical show of empathy (or even just kindness in general) we get from her. It’s also really interesting to think about them in the context of a more modern AU-type of setting, namely one where Justine actually gets competent treatment for her mental issues and turns out much more stable and less murder-y as an adult. But that’s another story.
I also lowkey ship Malo/Alois, but that one’s kind of a funny story. I actually didn’t really care about this ship at all back when the fandom was at peak popularity and going nuts over it - it’s only recently that I got into it, and it was by accident xD Long story short, I saw some angsty as hell ship art for them when I was scrolling through the Amnesia Justine tag a couple months ago, and it got me thinking about what could have possibly led them to that point/how a relationship between them could even get started, and I came out of that line of thought with more Feelings than I know what to do with. Their personalities are so different that they could either mix really well or clash horribly, or some combination of the two depending on the situation - so it’d be really entertaining to see them interacting in a romantic context. Alois, the romantic and somewhat prudish athlete with a jealous streak; and Malo, the playful, sarcastic musician with a hidden temper and a lot of issues that he doesn’t like to talk about. At the very least, I think it’d make for a really amazing slowburn fic x’)
... And I lowkey ship Felix/Malo like the weirdo I am. I know that this probably qualifies as a crackship, due to the fact that the only time they meet in canon is when Malo literally eats Felix alive if you fail to save him... but like I said before, I’m a total sucker for contrasting personalities. Especially anything along the lines of ‘straight-laced, hard-nosed detective gets hit on by a sarcastic flirt with ulterior motives’ is like hitting the jackpot, so when I starting thinking about Felix in more depth, this ship happened. Though this is something I mainly ship for something like a modern AU, where maybe Felix is investigating a crime probably related to Justine in some way let’s be real and Malo just starts hitting on him with reckless abandon. Idk I’m probably the only one who’s ever shipped it ever, but I’m really attached to it, at least as a concept.

Who is the Mun's favorite chracter from Amnesia Justine?
Honestly, it’s Alois. He definitely has his issues, but I’ve loved this obsessive man since the Olden Days of Yore (i.e. when I was a freshman in high school) when this game first came out - though thankfully I'm not as stupid about it as I was then. Some of the stuff I wrote in comments sections was just downright embarrassing, looking back.
He’s also the one I have the most trouble characterizing sometimes, since it can be hard to separate what he’d actually, believably be like from the idealized version of him that exists in my head :’) There’s a part of me that would love to think he’s just a Pure Cinnamon Bun Who Did No Wrong, but really he’s more of a Sinnamon Bun stained with the blood of whoever Justine wanted him to hurt, including himself.

Oh yikes, thanks for telling me about that link! The things I’m not comfortable writing about are mainly just the scat/feces/’piss kink’ and sexualized body horror (like wound fucking, skull fucking, etc.). I just went and fixed the link though, so if you ever need a refresher the stuff I’m not comfortable writing are listed there. If anything else comes up that isn’t immediately coming to mind, though, I’ll say so and make sure to post it on that page as well.
And honestly, I don’t think there are any pairings in particular I have a problem with writing (or at least I can’t think of any right now). Thanks for asking!
What gifts do you think the suitors and Justine would enjoy receiving?
Justine, as an aristocrat, would probably be pretty hard to shop for, as she can already get anything she wants on her own. The best things you could go with would be things that entertain her or can’t be obtained with money. She states in-game that she enjoys poetry, so a hand-written poem would be a good bet, if only because she’d find it amusing. Some kind of little puzzle or an interesting book would work too.
Alois is relatively simple - to him, it’s mostly the thought that counts. However, little homemade things like baked goods, handmade cards, hand-knitted things like a scarf would go a long way with him. He’s very much the sentimental type, so anything that the gifter put some time and thought into would make him happy.
Basile would arguably be the hardest to shop for. He’s not particularly materialistic, so a lot of common gifts like cards or expensive trinkets would get a lukewarm reception at best. Your best options with him would be along the lines of food and drink - some decent wine or beer, shepherds pie, etc.
Malo is similar to Basile in this regard - the best things you could get him are along the lines of food and drink. This man enjoys his alcohol, so a bottle of good wine or hard liquor like scotch, brandy, or whiskey would go a long way. Aside from that, he also has a heck of a sweet tooth, so sweets like tarts and ice cream would also be a solid bet.
- He’s actually the first of the suitors to have begun courting her. This is mainly inspired by the article about when he showed up ‘drunk’ at the conservatory and it’s specifically mentioned that he and Justine are rumored to be in a relationship, while Alois and Basile are only mentioned as friends of hers, implying that Malo had known her longer, or at least been seen with her more often than the others.
- He has a very sarcastic and dark sense of humor by nature, and has a fondness for mercilessly teasing others, sometimes far beyond what is appropriate.
- This man loves his alcohol, mainly hard liquor like scotch, brandy, whiskey, etc., but he wouldn’t object to a nice glass of red wine.
- In the same vein as the last one, he has a high alcohol tolerance, due more to how much he consumes than any natural tolerance he may have.
- He's got one heck of a sweet tooth, and likes to regularly indulge in things like pies, cakes, tarts, etc.
- He’s pretty out of shape, and is relatively unused to physical activity outside the range of walking up and down a flight of stairs or a light jog to the end of the street. (I know that he knocks down a solid metal door in canon, but considering that should be physically impossible anyway, I’m going to chalk that up more to Frictional Games not thinking too deeply into why their newest ‘monsters’ can bust through solid metal doors like the grunts and brutes, despite being canonically living humans who presumably have no supernatural powers.)
- He snores a little.
- Even if he’s massively angry or upset, he likely won’t show any of that around others, tending to respond in a snarky, sarcastic tone. It’s when he’s alone and out of earshot of others that he lets things bubble up to the surface, and he’ll probably end up having a fit involving flipping tables over, shoving chairs onto their sides, etc.. This continues until he’s either exhausted himself or ends up stubbing his toe on a piece of furniture he kicks, or just otherwise hurting himself. Either way, by the time anyone comes to see him, the mess will have been cleaned up and no one will be the wiser.
- He’s not particularly close with his family, and resents the way some of them are trying to use him for the limited amount of fame being a violin prodigy has granted him.
- His descent into cannibalism wasn’t a coincidence or random chance - Justine orchestrated it that way, using carefully plotted techniques to get him to give in and go completely off the deep end.
