Buffy the Vampire Slayer | 5.17 - “Forever”
laura’s endless list of favourites ● ships ➼ buffy summers & angel “I killed Angel! Do you even remember that? I would have given up everything I had to be with - I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life. And I put a sword through his heart because I had to.”
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER | (3.18) “Earshot” ↳ requested by anon “Kissing her meant nothing. I don’t want a bad girl. I’ve done that before. I’ve lived a long time, Buffy, and I’m past that. I’ve been with dozens of girls like her. More.” “Oh, this honesty stuff is *fun*.”
***Spoilers***
We have discussed before how season 3 focuses on themes of identity, integrity, and choice, and how each one contributes to the overall series view that living a life full of meaning and purpose is better than constantly pursuing personal happiness. In “Beauty and the Beasts,” Platt warns Buffy that losing oneself in love or desire, allows it to control and master you—a theme we see repeated in Spike’s speech in “Lovers Walk.”
The difference, however, is that Spike does not view being lost in love as a bad thing, or even a thing that can or should be controlled. His return in this episode was a clever choice, as his onscreen romance and heartbreak with Dru allowed him to be an example of someone who’s entire identity is wrapped up in another being. Even though he is capable of caring to a certain extent, Spike’s view of love is a twisted version of the real thing, and he is incapable of loving in an unselfish way. This is even more evident when comparing Spike’s attitude of entitlement and possession towards Dru with his feelings towards Buffy in the later seasons. In “Crush,” a furious Spike chains up both Dru and Buffy, blaming them for his own lack of self-control, while simultaneously be-moaning the fact that his love for Buffy has made him into a shell of himself. And in season 6, his assaults on Buffy as well as his selfish treatment of her trauma and pain, continue to reveal his twisted view of love as something that he is entitled to and incapable of controlling.
Spike’s innate insecurity drives him to seek identity and validation in whatever woman he is obsessed with. Cecily rejects his status and his poetry, leading him to Drusilla, who, being capable of reading his mind, tells him what he wants to hear. Yet as a vampire, Spike continues to struggle with being enough for Dru in comparison to Angelus. His adoption of the “Spike” persona is a direct response to his feelings of inadequacy, and he continually chases the “rush” of sex, violence, and death as a way to feel powerful and in control of himself, even as his desires remain unchecked.

Why should I live up to other people’s expectations instead of my own? 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), dir. Gil Junger
And that my friend, is how you plant a false hope.
This crack pairing hits me in ALL the feels. Height difference, thick eyebrows, tiny blonde woman with a bob cut, unrequited love, antisocial, honest man, opposites attract (and maybe age gap?), and I’m probably forgetting a few. :D
I’m trying to rewatch this series, but as I don’t like the main female lead (I want to, but she is so manipulative, and I REALLY empathize with Olive), it’s hard to get through. But I love all the other characters, and the writing, so I’m going to give it my best shot.

You can’t convince me otherwise. These two should have ended up together.
