for the first time in a while, kyrell regretted everything. his words, his actions, just... everything. it all hurt. he didn't want things to turn out this way, but he was so scared. more scared than he had ever been in his life. he never feared anything, not even as he faced space aliens that could kill him with a swipe of their hand—hell, he didn't even fear a pissed off siyun. and that's pretty damn scary.
from the very first text, kyrell had always known things wouldn't work. not with the way he is. but he ignored it, all for the sake of the feeling of you. how you'd make his heart race with your pretty smile-he always felt like he was at the top of the world. he thought he could beat the inevitable, that he could have it all. but it doesn't work like that. his secret identity and his longing to be everything for you clashed too much. he can't be there for you if you don't even know the first thing about him.
it hurt because it wasn't your fault. you tried to be there for him, he could've told you everything. taken the leap and let you in... but he couldn't bear the idea of something happening to you. what he deals with on the daily isn't for the weak, not for the average person. not that you're average-god, you're far from that. you're heavenly, divine... but he digresses. the glaring issue is that even knowing his true identity as spider-man is putting you in grave danger.
he couldn't deal with his crushing indecision of pushing you away to keep you safe and holding you close to protect you from anything that may come your way.
and now he has to watch someone else do what he should've done all those months ago. he has to watch some other man buy you flowers, hold your hand... he loves that song, but he never thought it'd become his real life.

god, it hurt.
kyrell is spiderman, sure. it's to be expected when fighting otherworldly aliens and others with mutant powers. but that doesn't make him hurt any less. his freakishly regenerative body doesn't make the pain go away, it just makes it heal faster. getting slammed into a building at 90 miles per hour hurts for him just as much as it would for you.
kyrell always reassures himself that it's okay. he's special and he wants to do good with what he can do. the media loves him— for the most part. dispatch seems to be obsessed with trying to find him on secret rendezvous with random people. there was once a rumor circulating that he was dating jiho because kyrell has had to save him from crazy alien monsters one too many times. other than that, the press is obsessed with reporting on the latest spiderman news, praising him to the damn ground. it feels good, watching the news and knowing he really did all that.
but it's not about that— it never has been. nothing really dulls the pain. people tend to forget the last part of superhuman— he's still human under all the powers. he can stick to walls like a sticky slap hand toy, he can shoot spider webs from his his wrist, but he still gets frustrated when he loses in a video game. he still gets upset when people are rude to him. and he certainly still cries when things hurt too much. he's just as human as everybody else, just with a few extra additions.
nothing dulled the pain when he lost his uncle ben. nothing dulled the pain when he lost aunt may. he carried the loss of the two people he loved the most on his shoulders as he swung through the city lights of seoul. he felt heavier. every swing he thought his arms would give out under the pressure, his mind wandering more than he could control. he couldn't stop thinking. about what would happen if he just let his arms give, if he let himself fall. he never had the chance to be a kid. he's more familiar with the streets of seoul than he is with the whole school environment thing. kyrell is a nice guy, but he doesn't have many friends.. aside from jiho, at least. jiho is a different story. he wormed his way into kyrell's life, leaving kyrell with no choice but to reluctantly let jiho in. not that he told jiho he was spiderman. jiho found out when he barged into kyrell's apartment unannounced, walking in on him changing out of his spidey-suit.
but that's jiho. kyrell is thankful that jiho has stuck with him for so long, but he can't help but wonder why. he's way too flaky and unreliable to really create strong bonds that are formed on trust and honesty. he can't bare to share the danger of knowing spiderman's secret when he knows that— he —is the reason uncle ben and aunt may are gone. putting people in danger is the last thing he wants to do. he's supposed to save people, not endanger them more; it goes against everything he's ever stood for as spiderman. so every time someone gets a little too close, past the guilt and past the weariness, he pushes them away.
that's why when kyrell realized he had a crush on you, he practically gave up before he's even started. when you sat next to him on the first day of lecture, smiling all pretty in a way that took his breath away, he gave up. you were like a dream come true— you were, and still are, everything he's ever wanted to protect in his life. he liked you because you're pretty. you're kind. your laugh made his heart jump out of his throat. spiders are bit territorial, so kyrell finds himself getting a little jealous every time he sees you laughing at some random's joke. he doodled your name in his notebook during boring lectures (during the few times he was actually present). he'd smile when you posted on your instagram, but he'd never like the posts. he doesn't even follow you. he thought it'd be weird, when he doesn't even come to class. but it's that nervousness that he strangely liked. he felt normal when it came to you, and he craved that. craving not just you, but the human experience of being in love. for how much he daydreamed of you, it was a little surprising just how against the idea of getting close to you he was. he knew that acting on his desire to get close to you was putting you closer to harm, and you are pretty much the last person on earth that he'd want to find in danger. he'd only end up disappointing you after having to leave you in the dust because of yet another mission.
the universe had other plans though. plans that threw him off. he told himself before that the stupid project assigned by professor min, due at possibly the worst time possible. crime always seemed to be more prevalent in the winter season. kyrell couldn't really name why. this project, however, caused kyrell to lose sight of his goal of keeping people safe— of keeping you safe.
you were so close. you were right there. his little daydreams felt more than just fantasies. they felt a little realer, just the slightest bit. and he clung to that. he clung to you and how you made him feel. the way his heart stuttered when your hands brushed underneath the cafe table, he liked it. he got blinded by his love for you, overwhelming all his senses, including his common sense. he felt like a fool, but he didn't mind because he was a fool for you. kyrell truly felt that maybe, just maybe, he could make it work. he could have it all.
but we all know that's not how it went for him.

kyrell awoke with a start on saturday morning. he was practically bouncing off the walls— or sticking to them, actually. he was really going to meet up with you, his crush since orientation, at a cafe to study together... alone! you guys are basically on a date!
which means they're dating... which means he's your boyfriend... which means you're both going to move into together, which leads to marriage, which leads to—
he's getting ahead of himself.
kyrell flushed at his own thoughts, snapping himself out of his reverie. all that will come later. he did a quick stretch before tumbling over to his closet with a yawn. are hoodies too casual? he loves hoodies though, and he should be himself. what if you like hoodies but doesn't like the style he picked? does color matter? what's the best color to wear on a first date? kyrell is stumped with all these questions left unanswered. sure, he's been on dates before, but with someone he likes as much as you, it feels more like new territory than ever. he spends hours in his closet, picking it apart like he's some fashion critic that's a little too picky for someone with such limited clothing choices.
after what felt like the most nerve wrecking eternity of his life (yes, even worse than swinging through seoul with a goblin-creature-thing hot on his tail), kyrell finally settles on his outfit: the beige hoodie he's worn a thousand times over and some jeans he didn't even know he had. simple, but him.
kyrell isn't even sure what possessed him to leave the house in such a rush. he grabbed his backpack and slung it over his shoulder like he was being chased, speedwalking to the cafe in record time. people around him bustled by, each of them in their own worlds. some rushing, some taking their sweet time. kyrell didn't exactly like those people, though. all he knew was that he needed to get there fast, and those people were not helping.
he wasn't sure what was buzzing through him as he slowed to a stop in front of fncafe. was it excitement? nervousness? or maybe it was the lovesick mix of both, leaving him both dizzy and exhilarated at the same time. the bell chimed as he walked in— the place was rather cozy, despite his own inner turmoil. kyrell plopped down at an empty table, sitting almost like a statue. his palms felt sweaty. he was looking around nervously. it's too much— he needs to get his mind off it. kyrell reaches for his phone, sighing as he runs his hand through his hair. upon turning on his phone, kyrell notices the time. 12:39 PM.
he's an hour and a half early.
great, now he has to sit here like he's been stood up. a heavy sigh left kyrell's lips. it's fine. at least he won't be late now, right? this is much nicer than swinging around and stopping crime like it's a 9-5 job anyway— speaking of, he really hopes no criminals decide to pop out in the middle of his date with yn, but he digresses. let's not jinx it.
don't get him wrong, kyrell loves what he does. saving the world, the city, the people he loves. resting assured that everyone is safe, not at the hands of higher ups that claim to care about the people they steal hard-earned money out of— kyrell loves being spiderman... but nothing really beats sitting down and getting to enjoy the silence every once in a while. to enjoy the feeling of being normal citizen, to worry little about the super villains lurking in the shadows of sewers and other grotesque areas. it's nice, and in a world of danger an unexpected change, the normalcy feels golden. he didn't realize how long it's been as he relished in his well-deserved break.
"you're early," a vaguely familiar voice sounded next to him. kyrell looks up, and lo and behold, it's *you*. you're dressed in the employee uniform, the soft orange logo fncafe in the upper right corner of your black tshirt.
he splutters, barely able to get a word out. "y-you work here?" he manages rather pathetically.
"yeah, that's why i suggested this place. i could get us the employee discount," you chuckle, your voice soft like a melody. your eyes seem to sparkle with mirth as you smile at him teasingly, "excited to see me?"
"o-oh, i..." kyrell couldn't even think of a poor excuse this time. he just sat there dumbfounded, a slowly-growing bashful smile on his face.
"well, i still need to get my stuff from my house," you hum, "want to walk me there?"
"to your house?!"
"yeah!" you beam.
"OKAY." he replies, much too quickly.
thankfully, kyrell is awkward but in a strangely charming way. there's so much about him that's strange but not quite off-putting. it keeps you on your toes, that's for sure. the walk to your house isn't tense or uncomfortable. you figured it was a little crazy to bring a guy you barely knew to your house, but kyrell seemed sweet. he didn't seem like the type of guy to do anything brash. not a lot happened on the walk, just some small talk until kyrell slowly eased up. he's a very animated person, you've come to learn.
you've also come to learn he can go on and on about the most random things. sometimes, it just seems like he's saying things just to say things. you forget that you two are supposed to be studying until kyrell seems to finally run out of things to say.
he didn't, but the tv hanging in the corner caught his attention. you follow his gaze and watch along with him— it's a news report of spiderman saving the day once again. he seems pretty engrossed in the documentary, so you chuckle.
"you like spiderman?" you ask softly. you watch as he jolts, almost like he's been caught in a web of lies.
aw, he's embarrassed about liking spiderman!
"oh, no, uh— well, yeah, i mean... he saves... people. that's nice, i guess?" in a desperate attempt to change the subject, kyrell forces out, "do you like spiderman?"
you think for a while, and kyrell looks a bit overly eager to hear your answer, "he's helping the community. seems like a good person."
a bit vague, but he'll take it. again, before he can stop himself, he blurts once more, "hypothetically, if you had to choose between saving spiderman and saving me, who would you save?"
kyrell's heart is racing, and it's not just because of your adorable laugh. he wants to know what you think. would you choose spiderman? he'd understand if you did, spiderman saves the city from crime and whatnot— but a part of him selfishly hopes you'll choose him. not spiderman, but kyrell. he knows it's silly to put himself against himself, especially when you don't even know what this 'hypothetical scenario' means to him. he just wants someone who'll love him for him. he wants to be loved for the bookish nerd he is, not for the destiny he was forced into.
as you think about your answer, kyrell feels like this is life or death. he's not sure why, you probably think this is just one of his odd questions that came up from his rambling, but he can't help it. it matters to him. you matter to him.
"i think," you start softly, letting your words hang in the air for just a moment, "the world needs spiderman."
his heart drops, but then you smile, "but i think he can handle himself. i'd choose you. spiderman is cool, but no one can really fill the silence like you can."
and that's how kyrell knew— he's found the one.
