l’Hôtel des Galeries, Bruxelles, Belgium

Small, independent, truly boutique properties always charm me the most, and this understated gem in Bruxelles’ historic shopping arcade Les Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert is no different. The FF&E is clever, modern and still elegantly proportioned. The pastel color palette reinvigorates the historic architecture with just enough playful eclecticism to be intriguing but thankfully not enough to overshadow the authentic heritage of its surroundings. If you want to know who to thank for those adorable soap dish tiles, the fresh aesthetic vibes are courtesy of designer Fleur Delesalle and architect/ceramicist Camille Flammarion. The pair has created a sublimely comfortable-looking haven, the perfect place to curl up with a frappe or stumble home to after an adventure in chocolate and frites.

The Flushing Meadows Hotel & Bar, Munich, Germany

This project is another foray into uncharted hospitality territory, with a unique site in the top two floors of a mid-century industrial block and only 16 rooms, 11 of which are each individually designed in collaboration with a different creative tastemaker in the Munich scene. The creators, architects Sascha Arnold and Steffen Werner, and gastronomy and marketing consultant Niels Jäger, have very smartly enlisted with Design Hotels, which was recently acquired by lifestyle powerhouse Starwood Hotels & Resorts. The collaborative creative direction of local actors, DJs, surfers, designers, film directors and more lends an authenticity to the design and hospitality that is impossible to fake - these guys really just want to show you a good time in their town, and their curated magazine OUTSIDE helps guests branch out into the local area and explore like a local.

magdas Hotel , Vienna, Austria

Life is so very fortuitous, because I've coincidentally picked writing back up in the midst of a very exciting year for new hospitality projects on a global scale. The groundbreaking hospitality project from this profile in Design Milk last week is blowing my mind!! I've had a personal interest in this idea of ecologically and socially responsible tourism and how design can play a part in that realm for quite a while, and magdas Hotel is a perfect example of the power of thoughtful design! Thanks to the efforts of AllesWirdGut Architects, the magdas organization and their sponsor Caritas Austria, and the generous community of Vienna’s Prater district and the internet, 25 young refugees of war, violence and famine are housed, clothed, fed and employed. The lucky guests of the 78 private suites have the unique satisfaction enjoying a beautiful reclaimed interior with handpicked local antiques while making an impact on more than just themselves.

The Pumphouse - Tasmania, Australia

Part of Pumphouse Point - a former hydroelectricity station converted into a sleek 18-room hotel in the middle of Tasmania’s Lake St Clair, the Pumphouse boasts 3 types of accommodation units, all designed in a calming color palette with lustrous oak wood accents and lots of industrial influences. Situated 250m out on the glacial lake, these refined rooms make the most of the stunning views with their generous windows and lovely public lounges overlooking the water and the nearby mountains. Other amenities include spectacular bathrooms, TVs, free Wi-Fi, and a fully stocked honesty bar on the ground floor.

I haven’t had the chance to work on such a remote and serene project yet, but this repurposed relic is on my list of must have experiences. I love how it focuses so well on the site and its context, both geographically and culturally. Another tiny wonder I’ll do my best to find my way to one of these days.
