World news
Found in central Texas. Looks to me like a black and white deaths head hawk moth but that’s nonsense cause aren’t they native to Africa and Europe? And they aren’t currently invasive as far as I know.
Hello, you are correct in thinking that this is not a Death’s-head hawk moth, but that is a close guess. This is a Rustic Sphinx (Manduca rustica) a species in the same family (Sphingidae) as the Death’s-head hawk moth. Thanks for including a scale reference, these guys can be tricky to tell apart from the similar Pawpaw Sphinx (Dolba hyloeus) and size is a useful character.
