It was after school hours, and Scout was holed up in the laboratory with a young Mandrake, a pair of heavy earmuffs on her head and a pair of scissors, ready to cut some of its roots. Her hands were on its leaves, ready to pull and braced for its deafening scream, when she heard someone else enter the room.
“Get the fuck out of here, the hell! You scared me,” she exclaimed, partly due to her explosive nature and partly due to the fact she couldn’t hear herself otherwise. “Rory, if you wanna stay here any longer,” she pointed to the spare pair of earmuffs on the desk behind her. “Y’know. Mandrakes.”

“Intense? I’m still confused!” The boy yelped, not touching his fries anymore. He glanced around the area to see if anyone was staring–or perhaps understanding how the conversation took an intense turn. “You see me as a friend, nothing more?” The boy asked, scrunched brows. It wasn’t supposed to make the conversation worse, he saw her as his best friend and she didn’t. “I’m confused about how I feel–about you and someone else–and, I don’t know how to handle it. I feel like I should like you, hell, even be in love, but something isn’t clicking–it didn’t click with Annika either–I just–” The boy was getting flustered, cheeks turning red and red blotches on the back of his neck from becoming embarrassed. “I just–” Before the boy knew what he was doing, he leaned across the table and kissed Scout, cupping her cheek while his other hand was pressed down against the table. He was hoping he’d feel something new, perhaps he’d only been dating the wrong people–but since he felt nothing. He reluctantly came to terms with the only possibility left, something that made him even more finicky.
The more Roman retorted, the quicker Scout’s heart beat. What was happening? Instead of answering any of her questions, he only asked more. He’s the confused one?! Scout scoffed, ready to dismiss it but stayed still when he elaborated on it. Someone else, something not clicking, Annika. To say the least, the sensation of his lips on hers and his palm on her cheek caught her off guard.
Eyes wide opened and baffled, she wedged her arm into the crook of his elbow hurriedly to get his hand off her. “What the fuck, Roman?!” Scout exclaimed, for once disregarding the stares they were beginning to get. “You’re my best friend, dude, but what the fuck is this.” she asked, desperate. She was anything but an expert on spontaneous kisses; if teen movies had taught her anything, it’s that first kisses were supposed to be special with that certain someone. They weren’t supposed to be rash decisions made by a confused teenager who didn’t even like her. Did he? What?!
For now, it’s too much. She shoved all of her belongings, free sheets, calculator and all into her tote bag and got up with a stomp. Her mind was too hectic to make any rational decisions. “You know what, this is all a bit--” she gestured frantically, “--so...just...explain yourself later.” The girl walked away, heaving and humiliated and...weirdly angry.

“Confused? About what? If anyone is confused, it’s me. I don’t know what you’re going on about.” Roman couldn’t recall the last few words that slipped out of his mouth, he never learned how to think before you speak. His foot began to tap faster on the floor underneath them. “Yea, you’re attractive–pretty too.” The best friend claimed like it was one of the most obvious things in the world, and to him, it was. He couldn’t quite understand how his best friend was beautiful, inside and out. Roman stayed silent for a few seconds before shrugging his shoulders, “Flirting? I don’t know, if I am it’s not on purpose–unless you want me to.” The teenager had flirted with her on a few instances, but maybe he was trying to prove something to himself and not Scout. His last girlfriend was Annika, which was a sort of recent break up after dating for two years, and he viewed the two as the same. The made the boy’s stomach turn, did that mean he liked Scout like that? Or just liked her because he loved in a different manner than the attraction he had towards Yari?
Scout laughed uncomfortably, setting her tea down on the table. “Shit, it’s tense now, shit,”
“No, I’m okay!” Scout replied, a little too loudly. “I don’t want you to, I see you as a friend,” she said hesitantly. This never happened in the movies she’d marathoned as a tween. She wasn’t prepared for this.
In theory, Roman and her would’ve made a great pair. Similar temperaments, parents don’t hate each other, they get along. But it was undeniable she couldn’t see him in that way and something told her that he didn’t either, no matter what other signs she picked up.
“Is there something I’m missing or something?” she said, face more perplexed than ever. It was times like this that made her wish she chose to stay in the lab the whole day where she belonged. Scout hated the soxhlet extractor, but...social confrontation, gross.
