I’ve been working on my balcony garden over the past week. - Propagating my pothos and watching some baby plants grow big. - I found two living roots from the Peace Lillies that I brought home from my father’s funeral ceremony in 2018. I thought these babies were completely dead, and I’ve been so sad about loosing them. Now I get to watch them grow again and hopefully become full and beautiful. - I also planted some lavender, some edible flowers, and some flowers that will attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. The Rape of Proserpina, 1622, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680).

This is one of the most famous sculptures by Bernini. It was commissioned by Bernini’s patron, Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1577-1633), and is titled ‘The Rape of Proserpina’ after the Roman myth. It depicts the very moment which the god Pluto drags the goddess Proserpina down into the Underworld. From this story, it is said that Proserpina alternates six months with Pluto down in the Underworld, and six months with her mother, Ceres. Ceres was a goddess of agriculture and this, along with Proserpina’s absence, explained the agricultural seasons to the ancient believers.

This sculpture is so well recognised due to the incredible detail Bernini worked into the marble. Bernini was so incredibly talented that he formed this marble into soft flesh. In this photograph, you can see how Pluto’s fingers look as though they are delving into Proserpina’s skin, as he drags her down into the Underworld.

I found out that this series was accepted into the SOI 61 exhibit and book~ 2018 has been a really difficult year for me, and I actually made these after a period of time when I wasn’t making any art at all. These paintings were part of an effort to get myself working again. I’m glad they found a home :) Congrats to anyone else that was accepted and I hope everyone has a happy thanksgiving whether you’re celebrating or not. Stay safe, stay warm, and eat hearty~
