002 Feature | Sohyun Yoon

A South Korean designer with playfully colorful work. Her “tone” serious pictured above is inspired by traditional Korean art - she drew from “Korean Colors: Korean Color Schemes and was inspired to incorporate the spirit of the Hanbok (traditional Korean dress) into [her] works”. 

“There are 315 colors in the book, and I selected 20 representative colors of Korea that I thought would look best and work in various combinations. They weren’t necessarily conventional or desirable colors for acrylic, so we tried to achieve the results we wanted through hand dyeing.”

Malene B is a multidisciplinary brand by FIT alumni Malene Barnett, who grew up “beside the Norwalk coastline, CT, on a diet of soca, reggae, and Caribbean folktales.” These beautiful carpets, among the brand’s vibrant art and pottery, encapsulate her love of color and texture.

The CH-24 Wishbone Chair

" In 1944, Danish designer Hans Wegner began a series of chairs that were inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Ming Chairs. One of these chairs was the Wishbone Chair (1949), also known as the "Y" or "CH-24," which has been produced by the Danish firm Carl Hansen & Søn since 1950. Comprising a steam-bent solid wood frame and a seat handwoven from paper cord, the sculptural Wishbone is made to last for generations and offers outstanding sitting comfort, with or without this optional leather seat cushion.”

The CH-24 is an intricate chair featuring bent wood. It was inspired by Ming Chairs from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), which were traditionally made from rosewood and/or sandalwood. Furniture from this period was simple and un-ornamental: a pre-bauhaus example of form-meets-function design. Chairs from this period also featured mortise and tenon joinery that negated the need for glue or screws. This meant that their chairs could be taken apart and put back together, making them travel and eco-friendly.
