one moment he’d been gone, years of trying to escape the endless loop for naught as he’d been erased by the very reapers he’d worked so hard to gain the favour of. everything he’d been, everything he’d tried- it’d all been for naught. and then, just like that, he was back, as if nothing had ever happened. a better man would have learned from what he’d been through, and he had, in a way. just not as much as he should have, and not for any of the right reasons.

he’d started stealing quotes a little less, now. if asked by anyone who knew his past, he’d insist that it’s because he was a better person now, but in reality, he’d rather just avoid facing any consequences that might await him in the future. speaking of which, there were a few loose ends he’d need to tie up, now that he was back. things were going well for him, even managing to have published a book of mostly original quotes! he couldn’t have the skeletons coming out of his closet, now. and would you look at that! his aforementioned loose end was just up ahead-

“monsieur kanade. what a coincidence!” it wasn’t a coincidence. not at all. not in the slightest, and the the somewhat menacing smile on his face was evidence enough of that. “it’s been a while, mi fan número uno- ah perdón- that’s ‘number one fan’ in spanish. unless...?” there was a purposeful pause, as if he were waiting for the younger to reassure him that he was still a fan.

the incredibly artificial smile remained on his face even as shiba considered his proposal. it wasn’t as if motoi’s livelihood depended on this, or anything. people loved a great comeback. if anything, he was even more popular than before.

allegedly deceased author rises from the ashes- that’s how he’d framed it. he’d gone through a rebirth, literally, but only figuratively for his readers. he just wanted to ensure he wouldn’t have to go through another if he could prevent it.

“for you?” he paused, as if he were considering the terms, though he’d already decided on them far before approaching him with the deal. “since we’re already compadres, i’ll cut you a deal- you pay me nada. but if i were to come to another untimely end...well, amigos help amigos, so if you could just bend the rules for moi a bit...”
