because it is the bane of my existence to see artists who don’t even TRY to get bird anatomy right, when they’ll gladly put forth the effort to learn mammalian anatomy
BIRDS ARE SO EASY TO DRAW
THERE ARE NOT MANY MOVING PARTS ON THEIR FACE
NOT LIKE US SQUISHY MAMMALS
still debating if I should make my own HOW TO DRAW WINGZ ref or just link to some good ones I’ve seen, since there are a plethora of both good and god-awful tutorials out there for wings already. I’ll probs make my own because other guides neglect to mention that GASP DIFFERENT BIRDS HAVE DIFFERENT SHAPED WINGS BECAUSE THEY FLY DIFFERENTLY
THIS IS AWESOME BUT JUST ONE NOTE
Almost all birds are capable of moving their upper beak, aka prokinesis, it’s just that parrots have the most obvious degree of it. prokinesis is the movement of the beak at the point at which it is hinged to the skull of the bird.
There’s like a million different types of kinesis to do with the beak/rhamphotheca/whatever but yeah, parrots aren’t the only ones :D
I can’t find any good pictures to demonstrate but yeah, it’s present in almost all birds. Loons and ducks are good birds to look at c:
Can I just say that the OP talking about how godawful this and how that’s the bane of their existence— uh.. thanks for the help but wow, don’t need to be so aggressive about it? Maybe someone’s really good at drawing one thing but birds aren’t their forte? What an incredibly sarcastic and rude way to present this, jeez. WOW THEY FLY DIFFERENT WOW Personally I knew that? But maybe someone just honestly didn’t. Maybe people learn better when you’re not yelling at them like R U EVEN TRYING WOW THAT’S HORRIBLE OH WOWWWW YOU JUST REALIZED THAT
Gillian Higgins is a champion horseback rider who teaches horse anatomy to veterinary students, riders, and caretakers by painting the skeletal and muscular systems on the bodies of live horses. She uses water-based hypoallergenic paints and spends up to 4 hours painting a single horse.
“Painting the skeleton and musculature on the side of the horse really helps to bring the subject to life, she told the Daily Mail. “You can discover how to get the best out of your horse by seeing exactly what happens as it moves.”
The English horse-ring champion and sports remedial therapist got the idea for “Horses Inside Out” back in 2006 after completing a degree in equine business management. She understood why many riders and trainers were struggling to learn all those bones and muscles with incredibly long names, and started thinking about a way to better make them understand how the horse works.
Head over to Oddity Central to learn more about Gillian’s awesome teaching program.

This is necessary, horses are the bane of my drawing existence. Why else would I participate in a drawing tournament about cowboys who ride dinosaurs instead of horses? Because horses are hard as hell to draw.
Haha, I recognize some of these drawings from my old 4H books. They also used to show us this terrifying cross-sectioned petrified horse leg to teach us about hoof diseases and stuff :’|

This is sooo me :D
This is pretty accurate :1
Now they just need to make one for cats so I can figure out what the fuck they’re thinking
These are examples of how I like to build a figure, either by stick figure or shapes. Either way, I try to let them find the natural curves of the body. Nothing is straight, because the body is not straight (even the bones).
After the foundations are set, then I'll add detail. It's important to remember that no matter how detailed or "pretty" your image may be, it will fall flat if your core foundations have not been worked out. Stick figures and basic shapes are a fast, easy way to figure out the pose first.
Lots of feet.

Random head angles.
More angles.

Hopefully this is handy for a few folks.
It is a miracle I have people who want to talk to me on a daily basis.
