Here’s a background tutorial that was intended to hand out to the painters on Over the Garden Wall…I’m actually not sure if I ever did (maybe German or Levon can chime in on this) Anyway, I whipped this up super fast in the early days of pre-production and it might be of interest or help to some aspiring digital painters out there.

EDIT: It was just pointed out to me that there’s a missing step 8…that was a typo in the original document…sorry about that.

"The desk of the Soviet student"

This task was the toughest one yet, since as you might know, I've never lived in the Soviet Union, nor am I from a country that was ever part of the Soviet Union. Thus, this photo was created not from my memories from that time, but from the memory of my relatives, and my knowledge of Soviet cinema. I do hope I captured, even a little the spirit of those times!

Это задание было труднее всех предыдущих. Потому что, как некоторые из вас знают, я никогда не жила в Советском Союзе, и даже не жила в стране которая когда-то была часть Советского Союза. Из-за этого, эта фотография была снята не по моим воспоминаниям, а по воспоминаниям моих родственников, и по моим знаниям о советском кино. Надеюсь что у меня получилось передать атмосферу тех времён.
