project hail mary really surprised me in the latter half of the book by completely subverting my expectations about what kind of person ryland grace was. so many scifi books with similar plots have very noble, heroic, and selfless protagonists who love humanity and derive a sense of purpose and accomplishment from their mission to save it, and they usually are this way from the beginning. which isn't a bad thing to be clear, i love those characters too. but ryland grace is not noble or heroic or selfless at first. he's selfish and cowardly and frightened and he doesn't WANT to save earth and he doesn't WANT to sacrifice himself, and he literally has to be dragged kicking & screaming into it. but he rises to the occasion anyway because he is fundamentally good at heart even if he's also fundamentally human. he's a weak-willed coward who makes all the right choices when it matters most. ryland grace the man that you are
