dreaming the nightmares away.
Your eyelids fluttered as you clutched the sheets between our forms. Your knuckles turned white, and your brow furrowed. Your lips were twisted in agony and confusion.
Tiny beads of sweat formed on your forehead. I wished them away.
I wanted them gone. I wanted your endless nights of torture to end.
You were lost in your mind. The one place you could never escape from.
Something bad, something I couldn’t protect you from.
I felt your heels dig into the mattress beside me.
Your breaths were deep, labored. You were running.
Away from what, I’ll never know.
I propped myself up to gain a better view of you.
I softly took my hand and placed it over yours.
Hoping to calm something, hoping to stop the monster from getting you.
Your hand relaxed. Your breathing returned to normal.
I smiled silently, your eyelids relaxed as well.
I fell back into the midnight comfort of sheets and pillows.
Your hand traveled on top of mine and closed. I saw a smile twitch at the corners of your lips.
You turned on your side, and wrapped your arms around me.
Our legs tangled together. It was all to perfect.
The nightmare was over. I stopped the nightmare.
Even if only for a moment.
