Avianna took a moment to double count the crisp Genovian currency before handing it to the taxi driver, unused to the look of the foreign notes. It was thrilling to be in a different country with its old cobblestoned streets, low buildings, and rolling green landscape. It felt as though Avianna had fallen into an illustration in a childrenâs fairytale picture book, and she couldnât help glancing around as she waved at the driver to stay seated and pulled her own bags out of the trunk. âThanks!â She said, shouldering her backpack and kicking her suitcase so she could drag it behind her.Â
Glancing down at her phone, she scrolled through her emails for her dorm information and began walking. âHey, sorry, you donât know if thereâs a welcoming committee or something around here, do you?â She asked a nearby student, hoping someone might be able to give her directions.Â
Linnet had arrived on campus early in the day, and after getting everything at least into her room (unpacking would be saved for later), had found a moment to step outside. She enjoyed autumn in Genovia, even if her heart ached for her homeland. Still, she had picked a well worn book out of one of the boxes, and was intent on finding a quiet place to read for a bit, before attempting to find her sister.Â
Setting on her way, she didnât expect to be addressed, and turning, she looked the other girl over. She was a new face, with a clear American accent, and a shaken Linnet had to remind herself that the next weeks would be full of new students coming to the university. âThere is one, though I suspect theyâre rather busy today. Is there a particular building youâre looking for?â Her mother would have encouraged her to help the stranger, and if she was at the university she couldnât be a true threat.Â
