Can people stop saying that Oscar Isaac would have been better as Doctor Strange than Benedict Cumberbatch? As much as I love Oscar, he wouldn’t have fixed the problem with Strange’s origin story if he’d been cast instead of Cumberbatch because HE IS NOT OF ASIAN DESCENT. POC aren’t interchangeable, and putting a POC in a story that’s intrinsically tied to a culture and community that they aren’t part of because “Hey, at least they’re not white, right?” isn’t a solution at all.Â
As a latina, having people suggest Oscar Issac is really insulting. Oscar isn’t Asian. Casting Oscar or another actor of color (I’ve seen fancasts for Raul, and Pedro Pascal) doesn’t fix the problem with Dr. Strange. Someone of Asian descent should have been cast. If fellow latinx people are advocating for this, don’t. We should be fighting for representation but not at the cost of other marginalized peoples representation. Don’t do it. People of color aren’t interchangeable, and suggesting non-Asian actors for a role that’s dripping with Asian cultural aspects doesn’t do anything but continue to contribute to the marginalization of Asian peoples.Â

and when you come out with your long auburn hair, clad in a maiden’s cloak of white and grey with a direwolf emblazoned on the back… why, every knight in the Vale will pledge his sword to win you back your birthright.

“That condescending thing gets me. The “you’re young now but you’ll know in a couple of years what life is about” kind of thing. I don’t think in a couple of years I’m going to have this huge revelation. I’m still going to be the same person. When you are an adult not everything changes. Teens are who they are. Trying to change us to be older before we should doesn’t make sense. I always want to have a free spirit —I don’t want to be strict with life.”

Okay, listen up 100 fandom
Dear white LGBT+ in the 100 fandom:  Jason Rothenberg is a bigoted asshole.  We POC in the fandom have been pointing out the racism in the show for ages, and you mocked and ignored us.  You even sided with JRoth after Ricky’s mom publicly said that her son was being bullied.  Now, you’re mad that he killed a lesbian character.  Do you understand why we’re mad?  It’s not until a white lesbian character that gets killed off that you suddenly care.  You don’t get to call yourself feminists and care about equal representation if you don’t care how POC are treated on screen and off screen.
However, as a lesbian, I am fucking pissed.  I can never hope for a queer female character of color because it is so fucking rare (thank goodness for Shonda Rhimes giving me Callie and Annalise), so I will take whatever I can get because it’s still something.  But when that is taken away from me, a person with little representation already, it makes me mad.  We don’t deserve this.  LGBT+ make up 40% of homeless youth even though we make up less than that of the entire U.S. population.  We have higher rates of suicide attempts, sexual assault, bullying, skipping school to avoid bullying, and mental health issues because of homophobia.  Media representation is important, but keep in mind that POC LGBT+ usually experience the worst of it.
Dear straight POC in the 100 fandom:  Please don’t gloat or mock Clexa fans for being upset that a lesbian character was killed.  Yes, Lexa’s white, but also a lesbian.  LGBT+ representation is so important because of the above mentioned facts.  We rarely get happy endings, and every time we get our hopes up, they are set on fire and thrown in the trash because that’s what people think of LGBT+.  Stop calling LGBT+ characters toxic just because they interfere with your F/M ship.  Also, stop glorifying your male characters for the same actions that you demonize LGBT+ female characters for because it’s convenient for your ship.  It’s sexist and homophobic.
However, please do continue to call out the racism and double standards in the fandom.  But please keep in mind that it’s possible to care about good representation for POC and LGBT+ because LGBT POC experience racism AND homophobia.  I know it’s hard to find a show that’s not racist.  Actually, I’m not sure there are any to be honest.  It’s frustrating and at the end of the day, we have to turn our brains off to enjoy any sort of media or we’d go crazy.  It fucking sucks, and I wish people would listen when we say something is racist.  But they don’t, and I feel a little more insignificant every time somebody dismisses my concerns about racism.
LGBT+ and/or POC in the fandom:  Please consider both points made in both letters.  I’ve met some LGBT+ POC who don’t think that the show is racist and tried to convince me otherwise.  I’ve also seen some LGBT+ Bellarkers trying to tell me that their fandom isn’t homophobic even though I’ve seen plenty of tag invasions to prove otherwise.  Don’t be internalized racists or internalized homophobes please.
Sincerely:  A black lesbian who wishes that media creators would stop giving us an either/or situation when we can have it all.  How hard is it to create a show that’s not racist, sexist, or homophobic?  Or if it’s not, why not fix it when informed that it is?  Marginalized communities signal boost the shit out of a show that has good representation.
