Kungfu, or Wushu, is a revered part of Chinese culture with many styles listed as national intangible cultural heritage. They are being promoted as part of the country’s traditional culture and sport.
ゴーヤードライビール // Goya Dry Beer As a food blogger, I saw this and immediately said, out loud, “I am going to buy that. And it is going to be horrible.” And that is exactly what happened.
Gōya is also called bitter melon, but even armed with that information, you might find it shockingly bitter. I actually like it in some stir-fry dishes, but it really, really does not mix well with malt. Every time I got used to the skunky taste, I would discover a weird new dimension of bitterness. I did manage to finish it, though. The things I do for love.
It’s been three years and I can still taste this.
It’s been seven years and this is back at the conbini…. and I need a break from packing…….. and I kinda want to punish myself……..
I thought this for sure would be easier since IPAs have reached Japan and I’ve gotten more used to bitter hoppy drinks, but no! This is bitter in a unique and unpleasant way.
The weird thing is when the taste hits you. Pardon my French but there’s no way to say this without it sounding kinda sexual, so look: it’s fine when it’s in you’re mouth; the problem is when you swallow.
But straight out of the fridge, the taste is masked enough to register as “weird IPA, more or less…… but once it warms even a little, it makes me shudder. I had visible goosebumps on my arms.
Anyway, that was a nice distraction. Also a memorable welcome for the Ryoma coaster that I unearthed today for the first time since our last move in October 2019.
“Nippon is again to be clean.”
Edit: OH ALSO, at one point there was a hair in my glass but I was already gagging so it did not make the experience substantially worse
My grandpa texted for the first time in his life today and he spit straight wisdom out of the keyboard

Neat pun and design on the community bulletin board!
5分で盗めま巣
~分【ふん・ぷん】~ minutes 盗む【ぬすむ】to steal 盗める【ぬすめる】can steal 空き巣【あきす】empty nest; empty house; burglar who targets empty houses
So the sentence 5分で盗めます means “[They] can rob you in 5 minutes,” and by replacing the final す with a 巣, we imply “if you leave your house empty.”
I also like how they’ve illustrated the 巣 character to resemble someone breaking into a house! The 田 radical is the second-floor window he’s climbing in, and the legs of the 木 are his ladder and his footprints as he escapes. The ツ is… the money he stole and the hammer he used to break the window and unlock it? In any case, very cute and clever.
