The 2008 mad cow disease protests in South Korea were so interesting. This economically vulnerable moment for the states would have been ample time for South Korea to advocate for secession from us dependence and national autonomy ..but instead became lost in the minutiae of how safe certain imported beef is. …criticism of beef imports from the us became a proxy for criticism of sk us relations…kind of a harbinger for the 20 years of discourse formulation to follow. Maybe I’m just over the politics of nationalities being villainized for being alleged vassal states of America or like “where the colonizers went” bc I’m Dominican and Puerto Rican but I just think it’s one thing to critique like America or specific countries in Europe where a great deal of their middle and lower class’s even benefitted holistically from neocolonial endeavors ..for those specific instances …but to sanctimoniously get into these wokeschisms when you’re a flat out multi generational American who if we did an audit on c you’d be in debt for so many kinds of reparations is NUTS to me. Especially when the whole reason any country got into that state is bc America or whoever bombed or terrorized the shit out of them to get there…no nation is even keeping score and holding Europe and America accountable so why is there so much nonsense and gossip over people who are momentarily a model minority or golden child.

I’ve seen so many movies on East Asian identity and have had a lot of east Asian girlfriends who’ve told me their life stories. Like a very close personal friend who was a roommate was Korean and it’s not really my place to say but there’s an extreme disconnect in how Asians are portrayed on screen and what is seen as unique to Asian identity vs “Latin American/european” or even African. But alot of what’s described in these Asian identity flicks applies to ..most nationalities who have been fluidly reshaped by neoliberal interests for a lack of better terms? I always loved the movie “the farewell” because of how it tackles this tension between American and “foreign” identity and the director even said she meant it to be universal …but yea idk. I think it obv has something to do w this Cold War mentality but I really feel like it’s a whole different world irl vs in media/online…the fact that “striver” is essentially a slur for upwardly mobile East Asians but this mentality doesn’t apply to other groups is so interesting and quite literally psychotic to me

South Korea Norway and Colombia remain the most interesting counties to study neoliberalism. Maybe Saudi Arabia too but its history w the old guard is kind of overshadowed by another country defined by pastiche people love to hate rn. Australia too , to an extent but I think what makes Australia interesting is how it subsidizes itself
