Pi Dan Noodle House
A year ago in early 2013, my friend Allison left behind a career in corporate accounting to pursue her dream of opening a Taiwanese-style noodle shop called Pi Dan in Uptown Oakland. Over the past year, we had all come to intimately know her vision for this restaurant (usually over a meal she prepared for us) and were excited to see it come together.
Then, about two weeks ago, Allison unexpectedly passed away. She was only one month away from opening Pi Dan. Her friends and family are determined to keep this project on track and have rallied together to carry out her vision. With a dedicated team of friends, a strong business plan, and a wealth of meticulously planned details she left behind, we have all the tools but not enough funds to make it happen. So, we’re looking to raise $75K, which covers the remaining equipment and construction costs needed to open the doors.
Allison believed in the power of a good meal and I can’t imagine a better way to keep her in our hearts than enjoying the food she loved to eat and make with friends. Now, you can become a part of her story too by supporting the campaign in any way you can.
CONTRIBUTE TO PI DAN NOODLE HOUSE TODAY
This is it, guys. We’re in the homestretch of our Kickstarter campaign for Got a Girl Crush Magazine, Issue #3 with only 4 days left and a little less than $1200 to raise! We’re *so* close, but not quite there yet.
For those of you who haven’t pledged yet, your dollars will contribute toward bringing a years worth of work to fruition. At any of the $25+ reward levels, you will receive your very own copy of Issue #3 along with some cool knick-knacks like an embroidered patch, tote bag, and more. If you can only contribute a few dollars, you still get some cool digital knick-knacks like wallpapers for your phone, tablet and desktop. Really, we’re grateful for any level of support!
For those of you who have already pledged and supported us, we can’t thank you enough. Please continue to tell your friends, families, coworkers, neighbors, and local shops about our project so we can reach our goal and get funded!
It’s been amazing seeing the amount of support come from all corners of the world, and we are even more excited than ever to show all of you what we’ve been working on – Hope you enjoy the super quick preview of the next issue above :) If we get funded, Got a Girl Crush, Issue #3 will be in your hot little hands very very soon!
Our Kickstarter ends Friday, March 21st at 3:30PM PDT. PLEASE BACK OUR PROJECT NOW!

GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling
A documentary from Brett Whitcomb that chronicles the rise and fall, the friendships and heartbreak, the rapping and slamming of the first ever all-female wrestling TV show. Somehow I missed this train growing up, but man oh man am I glad I stumbled upon it now. With characters like Matilda the Hun, Mt. Fuji and The Heavy Metal Sisters, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling turned out to be an unlikely set of role models for girls across the world through an awesome display of confidence, humor and physical strength. The documentary highlights interviews with some of these ladies as they recount the memories and sisterhood they experienced before the show was abruptly cancelled. It’s also got a great soundtrack by ESG.
The documentary is available on Netflix!

Today, Meg & I launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring you Got a Girl Crush Magazine, Issue #3! We are in the final design stages of the magazine, and can’t wait to share it with everyone. It’s 64 pages of interviews, essays and articles featuring:
Annie Larsen (ALL Knitwear)
Cait Opperman & Yael Malka (photographers)
Cristen Conger & Caroline Ervin (Stuff Mom Never Told You podcast)
Danielle Flowers (Gotham Girls Roller Derby)
Ellen Van Dusen (Dusen Dusen)
Jenny Thai (writer)
Helen Shirley (cycling advocate)
Mary Roach (author)
Paula Z. Segal (596 Acres)
Rena Tom (Makeshift Society)
Sand Falconer & Dana Wright (Falconwright)
Sonali Fernando (New Orleans renaissance woman)
The last (very) big step? Taking it to print. With the first two issues, we kept it super scrappy by personally funding the production costs…however, our pockets just aren’t deep enough to achieve the quality and quantity that we’d like.
So, we’re turning to Kickstarter this time around and hoping to meet our goal of $7,000. The campaign runs through March 21 and as with all Kickstarter campaigns – it’s all or nothing, baby! Every little bit helps.
We hope you’re as excited as we are to bring Issue #3 to life. Thanks for the support!
