Went on site for an upcoming renovation project. The client is an owner of a metal house(寮屋), which is built in the 50s in Hong Kong because of war in order to accommodate all the poor and refugees. These are later on rebuilt approved by the Government with written red marks for their offsprings to continue living in these house, and are called red marked house (紅字屋). The area outside the approved dimension are own by others usually the offsprings of those who don’t even know they own these lands, as a result these lands are fenced by different villagers and are taken as their own for different purposes such as gardening or farming.

Victo Ngai X Johnnie Walker Blue Label Special Edition

Here’s an exciting project commissioned by Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Available exclusively in Hong Kong from September 2017, the limited-edition 70cl bottles features a Cantonese opera performer adorned with iconic Hong Kong symbols including neon lights, colonial architecture and skyscrapers, celebrating Hong Kong’s unique Eastern and Western influences through marrying the artistry and craftsmanship of the coveted blend and the illustration.

This project, which deals with a three-dimensional object, provided an interesting challenge the images needs to work well as a flat image but also as a three-plane tryptic, and elements needed to be well-placed and not awkwardly cut off around the edges when wrapped around the next plane.

While the blue hues show off the natural golden color of the whiskey, we wanted the image to look good on its own too, so people will keep the empty bottles and display them as standalone art pieces.

As a beginner I totally understood that I wrote uneccessary over complicated script, but is okay, thats part of the learning, to write the script step by step according to logic.

The Sculpt of Space - Spent some time during Easter holiday to make this collage with photoshop, it is meant to be an atmospheric drawing of the top of a hotel I was designing, the collage attempt to sculpt the ideal experience with the perfect lighting I desire. The design does not have a narrative at all, the driven force is merely that exact moment I wish to create, something like Saul Leiter’s photograph I guess - It is not telling a story but intend to create and store the perfect momentum into infinity through freezing form of imagery.

At the Photographers' Gallery it was exhibiting all kind of projectors, perhaps projections are the best way for people to relive the past? Also the sound of the machines are so hibernating...

Saul Leiter Photography Exhibition Overview

Amazing work from Saul, many of his work are “untitled”, for rarely he is trying to tell any story of specific person but mostly simply capturing moments with pure delight.

His works are said to be done under the perspective of a painter as he was for most of his life a painter, and that’s true, especially when he captures reflection from glass or photograph through the haze of rain, they do look like paintings with layers of imagery through his work. However, more than a painter I feel his work is more of a well layout-ed style as if they are constantly ready for magazine publishing, leaving space for text or edition. His work often has words in it as part of the scene too which in my opinion give it a more graphical look. For in graphic design adding words is often a great technique in enhancing the overall graphics.

I love how he capture beautiful moments with great texture and atmosphere in such details, although the novelty of the photos are not profound, the photographs help audience reliving moments of the past. Moments of insignificant everyday life episodes of New Yorkers from the 70s. His ways of recording moments are so effective and therefore are extremely interesting for me.

But these work that I create perhaps is quite cruel... what’s the meaning of raising people’s compassion with apps and Facebook messenger icons ?(assuming these are real apps) 

I enjoy playing with illustrator on this one though..

Primarily an exercise of constructing portfolio through a game of association, just to practice how to structure a coherent portfolio, HTS elective from AA school. 

The beginning starts with a selection of a painting, mine is about refugees, and the portfolio is developed through a series of icon/apps design which intend to raise compassion of people through social media.

For if painting is a media of communication in the past, cell phone perhaps served the same meaning nowadays for people to share stories..

Hand sketch doodling plus quick photoshop, produced some very armature idea collages. I guess hand sketches will always has it charm yet can never be seen as proper media to present as a final media, at least at my skill level. Yet, it was enjoyable making these.

Photographed model then photoshoped. This is one of the entry of Can Ri Cart an abandoned factory area which is to renewed with a new facade, which portrait the accents of the ruin pattern. The left hand side includes an extension of the existing small building, as a cafe, which provide new entrance to the building as well as a passage into the Can Ri Cart area.

This is a photo montage/ collage/ section. I really enjoy redesign ruined buildings. There are beauty in abandoned architecture that has the marks of time through decades, which should not be demolished but to celebrate by revitalize the building.
