“What?” Gaara asked you gently, his eyes wide as if he hadn't heard your question correctly. "What did you say?"
You know that he's nervous about this whole situation as his you had just given birth to your child, and now he's a father.
You give him a tired smile as you look into his terrified sea foam-colored eyes.
“Do you want to hold your son, Gaara?” You ask again as you shift the infant in your arms as you hold out a hand to him for him to take.
Gaara stands there hesitating, gazing down at the swaddled infant in your arms.
After the commotion of your son's birth, the 3 of you were left alons in the hospital room.
In the silence of the room, there's a sense of peace, almost as it was always destined to be the 3 of you.
After a few moments of him standing there, clearly nervous, he steps forward and takes your hand in his, walking up to the edge of the bed.
Gaara then opens his mouth, a light strangled sound tearing from his throat, clearly struggling to find words in a flurry of emotions.
"It's okay my love." you reassure him gently.
His hands tremble as he raises his hands up before putting them back down again.
“Take him,” you say in a low, gentle voice as you carefully offer your newborn son up to his father, his head cradled in the crux of your elbow.
“A-Are you sure?” Gaara asks, a slight tremble in his words.
"Of course." you nod with a reassuring smile. "You're his father after all."
Gaara takes a second to collect himself by closing his eyes before bending down and gingerly wrapping his arms through yours and under his son.
As soon as the baby is cradled in his arms you see him start to shake, tears welling up in his eyes as he looks down at the newborn baby boy in his arms.
"Oh Gaara..." you say gently as you see tears start to roll down his cheeks.
“I-I feel like I’m going to drop him...” he stammers out with a laugh, tightening his grip on the blanket as he adjusts his hold. “I’m shaking so much.”
“You’re not going to drop him.” You reassure as you allow yourself to fully settle into your bed, your head sinking down into your pillow.
You take a breath as you watch your crying husband hold your child for the very first time.
“He looks like you, doesn’t he?”
Gaara sniffles, leaning his head down to wipe his face on the sleeve of his bicep.
“I was going to say the same thing about you...” he says, not taking his eyes off your son for a single second.
The more he stares at the baby, the more he seems to cry.
“I have a son… we have a son…” Gaara repeats like a mantra, as if he has to convince himself that it's real.
“I-I never thought…”
Time seems to stop as the two of you fawn over the beautiful creation you brought into the world.
