Thesis Exhibition Part 1. Sitting with Marta

April 18-May 23, 2019 Opening Reception: April 18th, 5-9 p.m. Terracotta Building Main Street, Alfred New York

This exhibition is comprised of a series of ceramic objects inspired by my grandmother, Marta Echeverri Gutiérrez (1925-2016). Due to instability and political unrest in our native Colombia during the 1990’s and early 2000’s, hundreds of thousands of people, including most of our family members, left the country. Marta however, did not. When I moved back to Colombia after more than a decade in exile, Marta and I spent hours together in her dining room, sometimes in silence. We shared meals, looked at photographs, discussed her childhood, marriage, and relocating to Cuba in the 1940’s.

150 to 250, hold 1 hour

999 to (100 degrees below peak temperature) 2218° F 
108 to (peak temperature) 2318° F / 1270°C
999 to dwell temperature = 1976°F / 1080°C 
Held at dwell temperature for 4 hours

Generic Crystalline Glaze

Ferro Frit 3110 50.0%
Zinc Oxide 25.0%
Silica 25.0%
+ 2% bentonite

Here: + 3, 6, and 9% praseodynium

Observations: Praseodynium fluxes the glaze, pinholes are present where black slip was applied in all tiles but it is most evident at 9%. Color is very subtle but the rare earth changes the shape of the crystals.

Slips: White Slip White over Best Black at 10% Best Black at 10%

Peak temperature = 2354°F/1290°C and 2372°F/1300°C Dwell temperature 1976°F/1080°C, held for 4 hours

Observations: Crystals did develop at both temperatures. Given that the higher temperature tests were applied thinner, it seems that the temperature change did not affect crystal growth very much. Glaze does not fall below the under-fired mark in Stull Chart. These tests might have to be repeated, after application and thickness tests are done.

Lana’s Purple Aqua- Applied very thin, by dipping in water, then waiting a few minutes, then dipping in glaze.

Observations: Fired to 06 in test kiln, it came out more violet than the earlier test. Application was very thin with a brush, still crawls slightly where it is thickest. Variegated, ultra-dry surface is lavender where it is thinest, to violet , to emerald green, and finally to a dark green where thickest similar to phthalocyanine. Very soft surface, scratches with fingernail, must be sealed at room temperature with a binder.

45 Nepheline Syenite 45 Barium 4 P626 2 Bentonite 8 Copper Carbonate

Observations: Fired above Cone 06 in a bisque, it came out really blue, might have been reduced, must repeat test. Application was very thin with a brush, crawls slightly where it is thickest. Variegated, ultra-dry surface is bright purple where it is thinest, to sky blue, to emerald green, to navy blue, and finally to a dark metallic copper black. Very soft surface, scratches with fingernail, must be sealed at room temperature with a binder.
