In 2 weeks I will be teaching a virtual workshop with @companiongallery This workshop will cover the process I use to make a locking jar. I will be demonstrating the simple throwing and handbuilding techniques I use to construct complex forms. We will also go over how terra sigillata and underglaze make kinetic pottery possible. I’m just getting back home from almost 3 weeks of teaching and traveling in Southern California. It was an amazing trip! Thank you to everyone who came to a workshop or demonstration, I had a blast and hope you all did also. I started with a 2 day hands-on workshop in Pasadena with @gbclayhousepasadena we had a good group of students from a variety of backgrounds and it was very exciting to see a beautiful studio operating in such a large and efficient way. Next I spent a day with the students at @csuciartdepartment . CSUCI had a great group of students that seem close enough to be family and they had my new favorite bathroom. Then I spent 2 days in Ventura with @venturacollegeceramics and @jenchiwu . Jenchi’s students were very excited about clay and they had a lot of good questions. Finally I spent 2 days in San Diego with @clayartistsofsandiego and @clayfolder they were an awesome group of clay artists that were really interested in all things clay. The conversations and had with @clayfolder and the rest of the group really got me excited to get back to work in the studio. The space provided by @joshhermanceramics was perfect for demos and it was great to see his work also. Then I spent a week vacationing with @almcgahey and @ryanoetting in San Diego, Palm Springs, and Joshua Tree. Photo captions: 1. Blind handle confidence just after attaching 2. It’s been close to 10 years since I’ve thrown any actual large pots. In college I made a bunch of multi part large pots but since then I haven’t touched anything larger than 4 pounds or so.
