Fic: Heart of the Home

Fic Summary: Dean Winchester died over 200 years ago. He has watched over the family farm ever since. As a household deity, he's more than a mere ghost, a guardian to his family and home. But after decades of neglect, Dean is on the verge of fading away. Real estate developers circle the property like vultures, leaving Dean on his last chance.

Castiel Novak has just been disowned by his religious family. He moves into a 1700s New England farmhouse; it’s in need of some work, but it’s nothing he can’t handle… even if, as he suspects, it is haunted by a former resident. As Castiel gets back in touch with his magic, and works on restoring the house, maybe it’s not too late for him to save someone after all.

Maybe together, they can take this crumbling old house and turn it back into a home.

Excerpt form Heart of the Home:

He needs this fresh start. He needs his own space, even if that space is in poor shape, even if that means sleeping on an air mattress and breathing in old-carpet-stink and having no furniture for a bit.

It will be worth it in the end. He just needs to hold to that.

A small draft of fresh air hits his face. He had opened up some of the windows to try and air out the smell, but there hasn’t been much of a breeze today. Outside, the sun is starting to set, the air finally cooling. He can hear a chickadee making its evening call somewhere in the orchard. Castiel pauses, listening.

He thinks of the cold fireplace. The hand-worn banister on the stairs, the quiet empty rooms upstairs. The letters, carved into the header of the kitchen fireplace. The house creaks softly as it settles. The house is listening to him right back.

“Hello,” he says to the empty room. “My name is Castiel. I fix houses. I’m… hoping to call you home.”

There’s a beat, where all is quiet. And he feels a little silly, perhaps. And he wonders again if this is all a mistake.

He hopes, at least, that he can make some difference here. Castiel takes a deep breath, telling himself he can do this.

A warmth suffuses him, in spite of the cool, fresh air on his face. The house feels like it’s welcoming him home.

Summary:

Jared Padalecki is a wolf living on an isolated existence on an island in upper Maine that’s been in his family for generations. A former model and fashion world star, his life changed 10 years earlier when a bitter betrayal sent him home to Wolf Island angry, alone, and wary about trusting again.

Jensen Ackles is a man on the run from a past so bad, so brutal that he was willing to die to escape it. For two years, he’s been living under an array of fake names and moving from job to job anytime he feared his secret might come out. When a sudden online ad for the personal assistant to a recluse on an island in Maine came up, he took it.

Two men with secrets. Two men with pasts that still haunt them. With an island that holds a curse and danger closing in, Jared fights to protect not only his freedom but also Jensen, when a sudden, surprising revelation reveals there might be more to their connection than they thought.

The complicated path this fic took from inception to presentation almost mirrors the tangled journey the boys took in the story. I started, set it aside, came back to it, tweaked, edited, backtracked, and then finally decided that I was just going to give them the happy ending they had earned. And truly deserved. Because I decided that no angel left behind needed to be the mantra that repeated on a loop in my head and then I went about guaranteeing that it was fulfilled.

I need to thank Liz so much for creating such amazing art that captured the spirit of the fic. She came in clutch after a last-minute replacement, and I can't thank her enough for stepping up and helping out! A warm thanks to the mods at @spnaubang as well, because they gave me the motivation to finish this piece that might have lingered otherwise. So please, settle in, and I hope you enjoy a fic where no angel is left behind, but then my favorite vampire gets his happy ending as well. And Dean? He can't be reached for comment... 😉

This bang pairing in the @spnaubang one of those "meant to be" sort of situations, I think, especially because of how sudden it all happened! An author ended up needing to drop from the AU Bang, leaving their artist in need of a pinch hitter! Sal stepped up with this fabulous Dean/Cas/Benny story that I'm totally in love with and filled that void. Then, that artist needed to drop as well, and here we are! I was a pinch hit for a pinch hitter!

That being said, Sal pitched this idea to me before all of this and I was totally in love with the idea. So again, definitely meant to be! It's one of my favorite ships, omegaverse, bottom Dean; all my fav things!
