  “–turn it off.”

Erik’s staring intently at the wall, absently skimming a silver pen along its surface without leaving a trace of ink. He can’t stand Edith Piaf- if they don’t turn the radio off, he’ll break it. There’s  enough on his mind without adding that to the mix.

The radio goes silent with a click, though no one has  even come close to touching it.

The barista- a good ten feet away from anything but the trappings of her craft- seems to hold no  remote; the mostly empty café only ripples slightly  at the sudden almost-silence.

“Are you all right?” she asks him with a squint, as though trying to place him.

Your mother died giving birth to you. Every woman dies in childbirth. If you have younger siblings, do not question how they got there. Truly, you do not want to know.

You have no ears, but delicate pink shells. Your teeth are pearls. Instead of hands you have small white paws. You are beautiful, and terrifying.

A handsome stranger has awakened something deep within your breast. You do not know what it is, but it is awake, and it is aware.

People keep dying of consumption. You cannot say as yet who is doing the consuming.

There is mist on the moor. There is always mist on the moor. Seasons have no meaning here.

Everyone outside of very specific parts of England is evil. This must be true. It must be, and that’s why you should never, ever leave. Ever.

“Sort of.” It wasn’t a lie; he was Viceroy of Heaven, and his vessel had been a Marine. “I believe the military would be a more apt description, actually.” Not entirely a lie— he had been a soldier.

He watched her slip the glass sharp into her pocket, frown creasing the side of his mouth for a quiet second.

“I don’t approve of violence, generally speaking- at least not the kind the military gets up to. I know my history.”

She drew herself up to her full height, and although that wasn’t very much, it seemed like a great deal more. Why was that?

“If you’re planning to try and take me away, I’m afraid you’ll find that very difficult. Even if you are from the army.”

Michael held his hand out carefully, slowly, for the child’s inspection, displaying his fingertips and the fingerprints that then followed.

He nodded once, withdrawing the appendage and crossing his arms, eyeing her quietly. 

“We’ve taken an interest in you. You in particular, not the woman you live with, if you worry about that.” he said, tacking on the last bit. “I decided to come here to see what else I could discover.”

“She’s my mom. It’s all quite legal. Are you from the government?”

Quietly, carefully, Matilda slipped the glass shard into her dress pocket. She thought it might tell her more later.
