The inspiration for Nemo’s sudden eagerness of taking on the challenge, he once failed before, is most likely influenced by the Pelican’s story about Marlin traveling the sea to find his son. Nemo’s ability to stop the cleaner hikes him out of the tank, which deconstructs compulsory able-bodiedness by him achieving the mission and including Gil, another fish with an impairment.

Gil is an important role model for Nemo because he is able to relate with Nemo on ideology of ability in scenes where Nemo states he has a little fin. Gil retaliates with an authoritative tone, in comparison to Marlin’s gentle demeanor, causing Nemo to approach his little fin (disability) to achieve greater possibilities. Gil reveals that his past had served him enough motivation to take on a life-threatening task of stopping the cleaner, when telling Nemo he was sorry for putting his life in danger. 

Gil learns that Nemo is too young to take on the task the first attempt, but upon witnessing his reaction to his father’s quest, he worries Nemo may have done the wrong thing because his fear of the past experience had set in, causing him to take on the notion of the ideology of ability,  “these past experiences contribute, one hopes to an accumulation of knowledge about how oppression works” (Siebers, pg. 284). Nemo’s action to stop the cleaner served it’s purpose as breaking the ideology of ability for him while making Gil proud too.

Reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes brings up a lot of ideas that support the ideology of ability. Patrick is a character that shows hyperextended male figured body qualities, by participating in triathlons and running for fun. While being obsessed with his body, he also shows negligence to Will’s condition and Louisa’s concern she begins to feel for Will. Patrick’s negligence supports Siebers idea of “mainstream identity.” (284). Patrick being shown in scenes full of able-bodied runner enthusiasts and claiming him to be “a blur in a crowd,” suggests that it is the more “normative” identity to have. 

In comparison to Patrick, we have Will who is disabled and often shown in scenes of anger in the beginning of the novel. It isn’t until Will becomes disabled that he begins to consider suicide, which supports the stereotyped view that “the value of a human life arises as a question only when a person is disabled...”(280). The body has no functions that Will believes are worth living life for, which may be due to a lack of accessibility that is applied in our culture today. This picture reminds me of the scene where Louisa and Nathan take Will to the stadium to watch horses and are faced with wheelchair ramp accessibility. In a world of 24-hour watch and aid, the accessibility should be available to experience whatever they desire.

While reading McRuer’s theory on compulsory able-bodiedness and queen/disabled existence, a few things stood out to me. Bérubé’s concern with having to be an “official spokesman on his behalf.” (372) for his son Jamie, who has Down Syndrome, particularly because of the many questions that followed on our culture. Also, the idea that able-bodiedness is vital to our culture’s goal, which made me believe that this notion overlooks the idea that someone can be different. Compulsory able-bodiedness creates limits and judgment on disabled people.

 In the movie, Benchwarmers, the goal is to gather as many “different” and “disadvantaged” children to form a baseball team. Some of which have social disabilities or physical impairments, all gaining an opportunity to be apart of something our culture consider’s to be a “normal” pastime, all thanks to three able-bodied men. In McRuer’s reading, he mentions that, “people have chosen to adjust to or even take pride in their “condition,””(372) which is displayed in this movie as well as in “Any Day Now”  the scene Marco disco dancing, (50:00) shedding hope on the struggles that his life is causing on himself and the people he cares for, Rudy and Paul. As far as their careers, the relationships with friends, and the choices they make in regards to their paths in life. 

Also when the director spends a majority amount of time on educating Marco versus the scene of the doctor explaining his limitations, is a good contrast on how they had perceived his capabilities. How he could flourish if he was supported, and loved, and ignored all negative connotations of being disabled mentally. Paul and Rudy are continuing to have hope when there is no hope to be had in the 1970s.

Despite their “conditions” in the movie, Benchwarmers, they are all capable of playing baseball which embraces the deviance of “normalcy.” Encouraging disabled people to break the compulsory able-bodied hegemony by finding every possible way to include each other. Benchwarmers displays disabled people partaking in the act of a game that requires “physical exertions required in a particular system of labor.” (371) allowing disabled people to feel proud and connected. 

This idea of being apart of something “normal” as McRuer would define, would be the testimony that Rudy had given when the lawyer Mr. Lambert was antagonizing him. (1:06:03) The director, wanted to created this connection between Rudy and Marco throughout the movie, using the symbol of the doll, ironically being the reason Marco and Rudy met in the first place. The audience knows that Rudy is an amazing father, because of how Marco sheds light to his condition and the pride of his progress being in a loving home.

this week’s discussion based on Lukin’s research on Disability and Blackness, raised many cases that I’ve seen in the recent years that deal with #blacklivesmatter #AllLivesMatter #AllLivesDidntMatter . This phenomenon serves our community with an outlet to express the multiple ways in which black lives have been mistreated, judged, and even killed for no justifying reason, but because of the color of their skin. Like Lukin’s research states, “many African-Americans consider being black as having a disability,...” (page 309) referring to the little to no respect that disabled bodies experience is the same respect black people have been experiencing for many years. The joining of civil rights groups is a foreshadow of awareness that hashtags like #blacklivesmatter #alllivesmatter #alllivesdidntmatter can bring. Educating our community of the many times that even our own government has accepted this idea of division between “us” (Americans) versus “them” (immigrants) or “us” (non-colored people) vs. “them” (colored people). Pictures like the ones posted above, using the hashtags like, #blacklivesmatter #AllLivesMatter #AllLivesDidntMatter, will ultimately raise awareness in ways that will bring unity. Some stories like the ones above are told in the news, but most of the detrimental stories are kept under the rug. Like Galloways mentions, “we [need] to support each other...It’s that kind of awareness that’s beginning to happen between the different groups.” (page 311) That encourages us as a people to never stop trying. We must continue to fight for human rights.
