Here come the waves

Welcome to my Tumblr

Over the last few months I have explored and documented visits to coastal areas local to me (in particular Lunderston Bay Gourock ) I have taken objects whilst there and created assemblages, paintings and a final installation to represent the waves bringing these objects to shore . I have used my Tumblr blog to show the process from start to finish and also to reference the artists I have researched and been inspired by throughout my module .

And so where I began I have now returned , and with me the objects I collected and assembled placed where I found them. The paintings and sketches have come off the canvas and flowed freely over the rocks with the breeze . My piece represents the waves bringing my found objects to shore .Various shades of blue voile where sewn together and I then used the rocks to support and suspend the wave by attaching fish wire to the material then stretching and tying around the rocks. I wanted the wind to catch it and give it movement by raising it off the ground a little. It got very wet and covered in sand but I quite liked this because it was interacting with the elements. The installation was then taken down and the voil I will use again in future artworks .

Oil paintings from the many visits and sketches I have done at Lunderston Bay, collecting objects and connecting to the surroundings . These paintings are not the final outcome but the site for my planned installation. They are my visual diary, my memories and all part of the developmental process .

Outside sketching, again looking at the formation and texture of the rocks . I then took my sketches and developed them into designs that I projected onto a wall and had riso-prints made. I also used the sketches as reference for large oil paintings .

Richard Long’s practice of creating lines and circles by walking involves his body . scratching his presence on the earth and in many ways it is performance art . His interventions are not permanent .His materials are stones, mud and the imprints of his footsteps but will eventually be absorbed by the environment. He works mainly in the landscape but sometimes uses natural materials in the gallery. His work explores relationships between time, distance, geography, measurement and movement.

I learned the hard way that when using sea weed in artworks its a good idea to let the air dry it out before you put it in a box for storage ...otherwise you might be greeted by fluffy rotten mould. Epic fail on this particular piece but I'll know better next time.

Lisa Kellner lives and works in rural Virginia and Brooklyn, New York. She makes paintings and temporary silk sculptures in a direct response to her surrounding environment . The silk will then be used again to create new sculptures and installations. I love the work she creates because its has a fragile ephemeral feeling to them . But what I really like is the fact that the artist sees these installations and sculptures as paintings that have come off the canvas and developed into something new. This is something I resonate with because being someone who once saw a painting as a final piece or end result I now see my paintings as developmental journies that will lead to something more , the possibilities are endless and although for me painting is still vital to who I am as an artist and what I do ,I can now see that painting has many forms. When I am creating an assemblage from found objects I am painting, when I am installing an ephemeral installation I am painting. This is how my mind works but it is not limited to a canvas, maybe there are no limits ...I don't know? But isn't that what creating art is all about? It's a journey that we go on and we are learning all the time through trial and error and lots of development. The end result is when you can look at something and you know all the other things you did that worked or maybe didn't work have lead you to this point and you are at peace with it .And being at peace with the connection you have made and try my feeling that you have been able to visually communicate this to the viewer can then lead onto the next body of work and the next and so on...why would I ever stop ?

Kurt Jackson frequently works outside immersing himself in the environment. He works in all weather's and sometimes has to use heavy boulders to keep his canvas from blowing away (I myself usually pack a few tins of baked beans or veg to keep my paper or canvas in place , it looks funny but it works ) . Particles of soil , sand and dirt find there way onto his paintings and for me this brings a deeper connection to place. Letting nature dictate and mould the art , the direction it takes, brings the art to life .

Alice fox is an artist who works with found objects and materials . Her connection to landscape and Geography inspire the art she makes .Her process of going out walking and being completely open to what you might find along the way is something I have being doing too .For me it's about having an idea/ concept in mind and then going on a journey to discover how to develop that further . I feel a connection to my surroundings and from that the ideas start to come.

Looking at the structure of the rocks. I'm working in a way that is driven by not only what I'm seeing but how it is making me feel . I can feel the ruggedness and the lines , horizontal, diagonal, vertical, crisscrossing. It's strong and it's fierce and I'm working in a kind of rhythm. That's the only way I can describe it to make sense to anyone who asks. I'm doing it spontaneously, I'm merely responding to the rocks and how they are making me feel .

What is different to me about drawing outside as compared to a studio is that my senses are taking in not just what I'm studying but everything else around me .The sound of the seagulls ,the noise of the waves, the smell of the sea and the changing of the clouds . It's movement its life and it stirs up something else inside of me that I wouldn't get by just sitting looking at a picture in a studio . I can make sketches and take objects and then when I return to my home or to the studio all these feelings that I have experienced are still present within me so I can continue to develop them into collages , paintings, prints etc ...I already have those memories now so working indoors after first working outdoors impacts on the art I will create .

Parklea beach near Langbank. I have taken some sea weed so that I can try a bit of seaweed pressing , I'm not entirely sure how it will turn out but I'm excited to see .
