Studio 54 Jeans (c. 1979)
I have this framed. If you look at the small print on the bottom left you can see that you could receive this poster for $1.50 by sending it to the assigned address. I did just that! This ad was printed in GQ in 1979. It was the apex of Disco, just before the first closure of Studio 54. It was the era also of “ designer jeans,” a wave of manufacturers jumped on the jeans industry that NY designers like Calvin Klein had started to design and sell successfully higher price point versions of America’s common very affordable trouser staple. Personally, having this poster up in my first, “living on my own ”, bedroom in a rental house, I shared with my girlfriend and friend, it was one of first open expressions of my soon be, “gay life.”
