The Common Core/Indiana SL standards are really focused on collaboration.

1. Start with one-on-one speed dating. Set up rows of desk facing each other, and designate one row to be the “movers”, and give them 3 minute bursts. The first few times, give them discussion questions, but after this is modeled, make them bring their own. Give yourself 10 minutes at the end of class for an all class discussion where people can share who had great responses to questions. (Or asked good questions.)

2. Build to small groups of 3-4 in which they have to tackle a question or task, and create a product of some kind. Then, scaffold up to jigsawing, making members shift to other groups to teach the idea to another group.

3. Use gallery walks after small groups. Allow other groups to see the “products” made and give feedback.

4. When you have those things down, then introducing socratic circles isn’t as scary. I highly recommend Matt Copepland’s book. Very down to earth.

5. Doing Socratic Circles will also merge you into the comprehension part of the standards as well, because kids have to evaluate other’s POV.

5.5 The way to assess Socratic circles I found was best with written feedback. You can make a google form, in which kids can privately respond to their own and their peers’ strengths and weaknesses.
