What horrifies me most about the events this week — besides the evidence it provides that the “Player Safety” system is incredibly broken and does not protect players — is the message this entire mess has surely sent to Tom Wilson. The lesson it has taught him is this:

I can beat the shit out of two vulnerable players (and be an unsportsmanlike dickwad about it afterwards) and receive little more than a slap on the wrist from the league

The repeat offender rule clearly doesn’t stick to me, because I just got suspended earlier THIS season and still nothing happened to me this time

I can do all those things and STILL get to play the next game in my usual position and minutes.

What’s more, when I DO play in that game and the team whose players I attacked tries to enact the punishment on me that the league would not, my teammates will stick up for me and fight multiple times on my behalf. Also we’ll win.

Players from the other team (including one of the players I originally attacked) will be suspended or otherwise punished for their actions in that second-game line brawl, but I still don’t need to worry about further discipline.

If the other team’s owner complains that I was not punished severely enough for my original violent actions, the League will defend the decision to go easy on me and fine that owner $250,000.

Ergo: I, Tom Wilson, can expect to be able to repeat that series of actions without fear of serious consequences.

If I owned whatever team ends up facing Washington in the first round, I would be giving Gary Bettman a BIG earful right now, because the message that has just been sent to Wilson is that my team’s most valuable and skilled players will basically be open season come playoff time, and he should expect to face no consequences for endangering or maiming them.

Good job, NHL. You really botched this one up good.
