Happy 9th anniversary, Splatoon 2!!! This was my entry point to the Splatoon franchise and I'm so glad I was convinced to try it, I owe so much to this game!

And I figured... This would be a good opportunity to celebrate a certain cephalopod's 30th birthday! I think Pearl would be a lot more chill about turning 30 than most, she's got like a solid century to go with Marina by her side. Luckiest squid alive right there.

Big Dad and Big Ma! Well, those aren't their real names, of course. They just thought the Big Man moniker was so cute and encouraged Frye to come up with nicknames for them too! Super embarrassing for their son at the time, but he's grown to love those nicknames and uses them regularly when discussing his parents with his friends.

Big Dad's real name is... as long as his son's lol. He was the head of the Manta clan for 25 years before passing the role to Big Man. He isn't particularly old, but he felt severe burnout and has full confidence in his son. He still happily advises him from the sidelines. Big Dad is a very warmhearted and laid back guy, and always has a pep in his step. He dedicates retirement to spending more time with his family, watching classic movies and adding to his vinyl collection. Naturally, he got a signed Anarchy Rainbow special edition vinyl!

Big Ma's real name is Ana Maria, and she isn't a Splatsville native! An aspiring dancer, she came from a faraway southwestern country to study at the Manda Ryuu school, and fell in love with her charming and handsome instructor - a manta her own age later known as Big Dad. Nowadays, Big Ma is a senior instructor at the school. She encourages Big Man to be independent and taught him many things like cooking and playing piano with much love and patience. She is a voracious reader, plays the berimbau, and is a total sweetheart.

Everyone gives Shiver mommy and/or daddy issues, but I couldn't do that. I am compensating by giving her granny issues instead! Meet Mizuchi Hohojiro, former head of the Hohojiro clan and a contender for Splatsville's Worst Grandma Award.

Mizuchi is a terrible woman - cold, arrogant, judgmental, demanding, and incredibly mean. She became clan head 50 years ago, settling a period of family infighting, but was forced to retire a decade ago due to poor health. She has only grown more bitter since. While the rest of the clan unanimously voted for Shiver to be the next heir, Mizuchi is unimpressed with her grandchild and criticizes everything she does or likes. The only reason she accepts Shiver as heir is because a massive great white wouldn't bond with someone unworthy.

Mizuchi is bonded to an enormous basking shark named Chika. No one knows how a miserable woman like Mizuchi bonded with a sweet and gentle shark like Chika. And as loyal as she is to her partner, Chika absolutely adores Shiver, so there's that.

For their part, Frye and Big Man are ready to throw hands/give a stern talk to Mizuchi, Shiver just has to say the word - she has begged them not to for now, but they're ready. Shiver's dad also has their back and, frankly, he is sick and tired of his mother's attitude.

New Splatoon OC (because I have a problem). Following the first Bankalive, Deep Cut were in the market for a personal assistant to keep them properly locked in. Enter Saira, a pacific saury who really has their work cut out for them!

Saira used to work at the DIY okonomiyaki spot Deep Cut likes to frequent and had a good rapport with them. After Bankalive they complained to Saira about needing someone to sort their stuff so they won't make fools of themselves in front of Inkopolis types again. Saira, who had recently graduated from Splatsville University with a degree in media and communication studies (on a full scholarship), gave them a few ideas, but in the end Deep Cut were like, "actually, how about you quit your job and work for us instead?"

Splatsville born and raised, Saira understands where Deep Cut's city pride and mischievous nature stem from and is thus uniquely well-suited to handling these three goobers. They're very go with the flow, though they can still get pretty frazzled and anxious - they're learning! They know plenty about Deep Cut's secret charity work and deeply appreciate it, and know just enough about the banditry to figure they don't want to ask about the specifics. It's all fine as long as these three don't get in too much *public* trouble, y'know?
