Since the age of eleven Neji could count on one hand the instances where he'd gone more than a week without seeing Lee or Tenten. This was no exception, however it had felt like a very long five days. It had rained the entire time he was away on the most boring mission known to ninja-kind, and he was in a foul mood. He'd been intending to avoid people, actually, but he couldn't very well slam his door in Lee's face.

Instead, he summoned a strained smile and beckoned for Lee to come in hoping he didn't look too much like all he wanted to do was curl up under his blankets. Shinobi did not hide from their responsibilities under a blanket. At the very least they hid in a tree, or something.

"It has been a while, Lee," he said, closing the door gently. "I must admit I do not have much confidence in my own suitability as a companion at the moment..." his eyes trailed over Lee. Somehow, he did not think he was going to scare his team mate off. Sometimes it was easier to give up before you could properly lose.

"How about yourself, Lee? I trust you are well."

Inquiring orbs continued to drift across her assigned scripts; regarding each stroke of a brush, each complete symbol, as an advancement to what she had previously known a few moments ago. She could feel the knowledge flower within her; she just hoped that the petals wouldn’t fall too soon and cloud the clarity she felt at this point. 

Neji’s company brought a sense of calming familiarity that only enabled her study efforts. Even when she turned to converse with him, she could continue to think on her topic; the words coming so naturally she barely had to work her lips to move. 

"On a scale from 1 to Gai-Sensei’s and Lee’s eyebrows; how youthful would you rate today?"

As Tenten studied Neji let his eyes fall shut. He'd all ready meditated today, but it was easy to fall into the familiar pattern of breath. He wasn't looking for that same peace of mind, instead he enjoyed the slight breeze, the heat of the sunshine, the sound of wind in the leaves, and of course Tenten's presence.

When she spoke again he pried open an eye to assure her he was paying attention. "Hmmm," the other eye opened. "Not quite the level of Kakashi-sensei at a book sale," he said, entertaining her for now. "Why, do you require a brighter flame for reading?" Never mind it was sunny out.

A sound, nothing less than a childish giggle, sang from her throat. 

"I, Neji Hyuga," She chirped excitedly as she held out her arms as though to present him with a fantastic surprise. "Am learning Doton justus; Yamato-Taichou is teaching me when he can." Once she’d revealed her activity her arms returned to sit in her lap. "I wouldn’t mind it if you sat with me and kept me company though."

Donton jutsu? Neji nodded, settling next to his team mate soundlessly.

"That is very kind of him," he said. He admired Tenten's endless pursuit of knowledge however. Far too many passed his team mate up as somehow lesser than himself, or Lee or many others, unaware of her ambition and talents. Their loss.

Her taste in company now..."and it would be my pleasure, Tenten."

"Neji, my youthful comrade! I have missed you dearly, I am in desperate need of your company!"

"Of course Lee, how I could a refuse such an impassioned plea, hmm?"

Which was to say, he'd missed him too.

A warm smile presented itself upon registering the familiar presence of her collected team mate.

"Neji." She nodded in greeting, turning back to continue inspecting her scroll laid out in front of her crossed legs. "What brings you out here today?"

Neji came to stand by Tenten, not wanting to sit if he was going to be in the way.

"I am just enjoying the good weather," he said, idly inspecting her scroll. "I hope I'm not intruding."

~Neji! I stared at him as his response had taken me back and I analyzed what was happening. ~Not dull… smartest… beyond that…What was going on? Why was he shaking his head? Does he actually want to know about my day? 

"Let’s just go get something to eat." I had brushed off what I had said before and just let it be. "I’m fine, There isn’t anything to discuss." I softly smiled.  "I’ll rather catch up with you." I slowly wrapped my arm with his and steered him towards the path since we were almost near the shop. "Anyways we haven’t seen each other in weeks." Or was it almost a month already. Now that I think about it why am I keeping track over the older sinobi….-I felt my head kept steering somewhere else when I was near him. I felt different.

Catching Shikamaru off guard had not been the point of his compliment, well there hadn't been much of a point to it at all, actually, but it was a nice happenstance all the same. Not many could say they'd done so, after all.

"Food then," he said. He wasn't sure how to react to the smile, Shikamaru was more of a smirker than anything. He offered a small one of his own as he considered his answer.

"I have been busy," he said. "I've had only a day between missions for the last month. I have the next two weeks off, however. A member of my team broke his leg, so the doctor's have grounded us all as punishment."

His poor rookie wasn't making a good impression. "I've kept to myself the fact I'm rather glad for the reprieve. It has been...far too long, since I saw some of you."

He had nailed it!!- I have been having an off day. I felt as the only sinobi that would notice would be him but it felt odd that was so outspoken about it. “Hn” I wasn’t sure what to respond. Was there anything to respond by if it was completely true. 

I wasn’t sure what I was even saying anymore -maybe I hit the wrong nerve around him or it was to amusing to see the crinkle his nose when he was annoyed. “Left me? -I wouldn’t be surprised” I said amusingly “Usually everyone finds me a bit dull.” I looked at him with a flat stare. “Let’s go get some dango or what do you prefer?.”

Neji was not the most socially gifted of his peers, but he was well known for his intelligence and was a shinobi besides. Shikamaru's stiff posture and dithering were so out of norm a genin would notice.

Neji paused at that, and after a moment grasped the material of Shikamaru's shirt, just near the elbow. "You, Nara Shikamaru," he said seriously, "are not dull. You're the smartest in our age group, and the village beyond that." He shook his head, "so we'll go get dango, and you can tell me what has you so..." he was not going to say weird, "odd."

Better, marginally.
