Educate your children first, then let them savour azaadi, says Subhash Ghai
India needs to educate its children first before giving them full freedom of expression, Bollywood showman Subhash Ghai said on Sunday while speaking on the sidelights of the ongoing International Film Festival of India.
âGive the children education first, and then let them savour azaadi. That way, they wonât abuse azaadi,â said Ghai, who can always be relied upon to give a quotable quote or two.
CENSORSHIP NOT THAT âBIGâ A PROBLEM
On the penultimate day of the 47th IFFI, Ghai insisted censorship was actually not as huge a problem as it was made out to be. âWe are going through it smoothly. We get what we want as film-makers. Sure, conflicts will always be there between the censor board and filmmakers, but one person should know how to convince the other with logic. I have been hearing about censor woes since the time I entered filmmaking over three decades ago,â he said, adding in jest: âIn the sixties, the censors would baulk over kissing scenes. Today, they donât mind. Rather, they almost ask you, 'kissing scene kahaan hai tumhare film mein?!â
He takes a pragmatic line when it comes to comparing India or Indian cinema to the West. âWe compare ourselves to the West very conveniently. We forget the basic difference in their education pattern and ours. Their teaching is skill-based while we rely on memory-based techniques even today. It is the reason they can make iPhone 7 while we are contented selling it,â he said.
The subject veers to filmmaking, and he doles out technical explanation. âThere are two aspects to film-making. A film-maker explores, and a filmmaker believes. Belief is the part where one draws from what has already worked-it is about rehashing from classics and epics, as well as remaking what has worked in the past with oneâs own input.
Exploring is about looking for new dimensions in any theme. For a creative artist, humankind still has billions of dimensions still left to explore,â he pointed out. He has glowing words for Bollywoodâs new generation of directors. âThey are making wonderful films. They are revealing so many new kinds of philosophies in the stories they tell. I am proud to be working with them,â he said.
