The weekend arrived faster than expected.
It was already the day of the party with Jake and his friends… including Heeseung.
It was going to be the first time you saw him since he broke up with you. You didn’t really know how to handle it.
Especially because you still loved him, and deep down, you were sure he still loved you too. Despite the brutal breakup, there were still so many signs. He had kept every Instagram post about you on his account, the two of you still followed each other everywhere, and he hadn’t blocked you.
It felt like nothing had really changed except for the fact that he was gone.
Tonight, your goal was clear: you were going to do everything you could to bring Heeseung back to you.
This time, you didn’t want to get too close to Jake. You just wanted to naturally reconnect with your ex without anyone getting hurt.
So you got ready. You even wore the jewelry Heeseung gave you for your birthday.
You still kept your outfit pretty simple. It wasn’t a ball or anything, just a pizza night where everyone would hang out and talk.
Jake had insisted on picking you up, but you refused. You absolutely wanted to go by yourself. You were already going to see him all night, so you definitely didn’t want to spend the drive with him too.
In the end, you agreed to meet in front of the building instead.
You left your apartment, entered the address into your GPS, and drove there. The party was at Sunghoon’s apartment, a close friend of both Jake and Heeseung. You had met him years ago in high school and only a few times recently whenever you were with Heeseung.
The drive somehow felt both painfully long and way too short.
You were nervous about everything that could happen tonight. How were you supposed to handle being at a party with both of your exes present, one of them pretending to be your new boyfriend?
When you finally arrived, you took a deep breath and noticed Jake standing nearby. You got out of your car and walked over to him. He followed your movements with a small smile as you stopped in front of him.
“Hi. You look so pretty,” he replied immediately, smiling as he looked you up and down.
“Hmm… thanks,” you muttered, avoiding his eyes. “Can we go inside now?”
“Yeah, let’s go,” he finally answered, almost like he had just snapped out of a dream.
The two of you stepped into the elevator. He noticed how tense you looked.
“You okay?” he asked softly, sounding genuinely worried.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” you replied with a smile that clearly wasn’t convincing.
“Hey, don’t worry. It’ll be okay,” he said reassuringly. “And if you really feel uncomfortable, we can leave. No problem.”
He stepped a little closer as if he wanted to share his calmness with you.
The elevator doors opened, and the two of you walked toward the apartment.
Jungwon opened the door and smiled the second he saw you both. You actually knew Jungwon pretty well, so seeing him instantly made you feel a little better.
He invited you in even though it wasn’t even his apartment.
“Hey yn, it’s been a long time,” he said casually, almost like nothing had happened.
At first, you thought you were some of the first people to arrive, which comforted you a little. But when Jungwon led you into the living room, you realized you were actually the last ones there.
Did Jake purposely give you the wrong time so this would happen?
Honestly, you didn’t even think about it.
Because the only thing you saw was him. The small smile that had been on your lips disappeared instantly.
You felt like you were dreaming. You didn’t think moments like this actually existed outside of movies, but when your eyes met Heeseung’s, it felt like time completely stopped.
The moment felt endless before reality suddenly came crashing back.
“Guys, they’re here,” Jungwon announced.
Everyone stood up to greet you briefly. At that moment, all you wanted to do was disappear.
You felt so alone in a room full of people.
And part of you believed that some of them probably weren’t happy to see you there tonight. Just a few weeks ago, you had been so happy beside Heeseung. And now you were showing up to their party with another guy from their friend group.
You sat down next to Jake, which oddly comforted you a little.
You could feel people staring, especially Heeseung. But you didn’t understand him at all. A few days ago, he told you the two of you couldn’t stay together and that you needed to forget him.
But now, the way he was looking at you…
You knew that look. It was exactly the same look he used to give you when the two of you were deeply in love.
You felt completely lost. Everyone ignored you. You felt like you didn’t belong there, and it hurt. You kept thinking about the past, when everything used to feel okay.
Everyone ate together while talking casually. You forced yourself to eat one or two slices of pizza, but your appetite was completely gone.
Heeseung watched you quietly before pulling out his phone.
A notification suddenly appeared on your screen.
The second you locked your phone, you felt like you had imagined everything.
Your ex-boyfriend of more than two years—the same person who cut you off so suddenly—had just texted you to make sure you were eating.
You tried your best to hide your smile.
Instinctively, you started thinking that maybe coming tonight had actually been worth it.
Even though everyone continued talking mostly amongst themselves, you somehow felt a little less alone.
You tried following their conversations even though you barely understood half of them. Different discussions were happening all around the room.
Then, suddenly, one of them started making you feel strangely targeted.
“I don’t know how she can move on that fast.”
“I understand why you broke up with her.”
“Bro, shut up,” Heeseung snapped immediately. “That’s not what you think.”
But after hearing those words, you didn’t even register the fact that Heeseung defended you.
That’s what they thought of you?
You felt humiliated. You suddenly felt like the center of attention in the worst possible way, and you hated it.
Jake looked at you immediately.
You forced a smile onto your face.
“I just need to reply to an important text.”
Then you walked out. The second you got outside, you completely broke down. Those words were too much.
You sat on the floor, pulling your knees close to your chest as you buried your face into your arms and cried.
You didn’t understand anything anymore.
Why did everyone have such a terrible image of you?
How could you agree to come tonight knowing something like this would probably happen?
Too many thoughts rushed through your head at once.
You heard footsteps approaching you, but you didn’t even lift your head.
You didn’t answer. No words could come out. You felt the person crouch down in front of you.
“yn, what happened? Talk to me…”
Of course, you recognized Jake’s voice immediately.
Without looking up, you simply whispered:
He didn’t answer. He just stayed there beside you, not wanting to pressure you. You couldn’t stop crying.
Eventually, he stood up and held his hand out toward you.
“yn”, come on. Don’t stay on the floor.”
You stayed there for another moment before finally taking his hand while keeping your head down. Now standing in front of him, you still avoided his eyes. He watched you carefully, worry written all over his face.
“Why am I the one getting judged when I’m the one who got my heart broken?” you finally whispered.
As if he could feel exactly what you needed, he pulled you into his arms. You hugged him back without even thinking about it because you desperately needed comfort.
You cried against him while he gently stroked your hair. He held you carefully, whispering soft reassurances and telling you everything would be okay.
Once your crying calmed down a little, he gently lifted your chin. His hand rested against your cheek. You looked at him with tear-filled eyes, your makeup ruined from crying.
“It’s not your fault,” he said softly. “You didn’t do anything wrong to deserve this. I see how hard you’re trying to get through everything. And I’m proud of you.”
His words affected you more than you expected.
They were exactly what you needed to hear. You thought it would stop there. You in his arms. Him comforting you like a friend.
But neither of you looked away.
The two of you slowly leaned in at the same time, almost giving each other the chance to pull back.
Then your lips finally met in a warm, comforting kiss. You both hesitated at first. It almost felt like two teenagers kissing for the very first time.
His hands slowly moved lower, one resting on your waist while the other settled on your hip. Your own hands moved upward naturally, one against his cheek and the other gripping his shoulder near his neck.
For some reason, the kiss slowly deepened. You parted your lips slightly, allowing him to kiss you more deeply. Your breathing became heavier as the moment intensified.
But what you didn’t know was that Heeseung had seen everything. He had come outside shortly after Jake for the exact same reason. He was worried about you too. And now, there you were, kissing his best friend right in front of him. He watched for a few seconds before quietly walking away. Far too hurt to keep looking.
But you never saw him. Eventually, you pulled away from Jake, your hands pressed lightly against his chest.
“I don’t think this is right,” you whispered guiltily.
“What we’re doing. I think this is a mistake.” (Yeah. A huge mistake, if only you knew.)
“yn,” Jake said softly, “I think we both needed that more than we want to admit.”
You felt completely lost.
For weeks now, you had felt empty and alone. Jake was the only person giving you the attention and comfort you desperately needed. And honestly… it felt good. You just wanted to breathe again. You wanted to stop thinking for once. But you still couldn’t admit that to yourself.
“Do you wanna come over to my place?”
