I am once again reminding the entire Pitt fandom that Al-Hashimi is a TEMP. She is coming in for three months as interim chief of emergency medicine while Robby is on sabbatical, and that is the extent of her contract with PTMC. She has never worked at PTMC before and may or may not be offered a full-time position after Robby comes back, but right now she is NOT a full-time permanent attending physician. She is a TEMP.

So part of what makes her storyline so devastating is the fact that she has to admit that she straight up CAN’T do the job that she was hired to do at PTMC, because that job was specifically for THESE THREE MONTHS. Right now, PTMC doesn’t care if she’ll be safe to run traumas and perform procedures on critical patients in six months because they didn’t hire her with the intention of having her there six months from now! They hired her to work NOW, and now is specifically the time when, after YEARS of being able to practice safely and provide excellent care as an emergency medicine doctor, all of a sudden, she CAN’T do it, through no fault of her own.

It’s cruel and unfair and heartbreaking and it’s also Just One Of Those Things that happens when you live with a disability or chronic illness, and Sepideh Moafi captured all of that so well in this episode.

this is really going to be a lot and sort of personal, but I have been thinking about robby’s reluctance to access therapy earlier in this season and his refusal to speak about his feelings in general. and yes, he is a man of a certain age and there is a culture and a very negative stigma around mental health and that is a huge piece of it.

but I’ve been thinking about him in relation to my parents and Jewish adults of their generation ( who are a little older than robby ), and the intergenerational trauma that being raised only one generation removed from the holocaust, raised by a grandmother who likely fled russia/eastern europe due to antisemitic violence, what that does to your nervous system. when my mother was a child in the 60s and 70s, any incident of antisemitism had the adults of her community gathering in her father’s living room, talking about how “it was happening again” and worrying that they would have to flee. even if all your relatives were in north america, as mine were, the fear was very alive.

this trauma and this fear are tangible in the Jewish adults of robby’s age who I know. and it brings with it this raw, open wound, stories and stories from elders of death and unsafety and things changing so fast and violence, and that all of this was only 10, 20 years before their birth. it makes any sort of feeling of safety or permanence or place or home always a little precarious. to be raised in an environment where the fear of everything falling apart is always being spoken about around you ( even as we assimilate into broader society and try to forget ), it makes it hard to feel safe.

in a family, a community, where parents and grandparents and relatives and friends have survived and fled antisemitic violence and murder across europe, there is such little room to talk about mental health and struggle now. there is self-stigma for being ungrateful for the safety and freedom of your life now, that your ancestors did not live to see. there is the internal feeling that oh, my parents had it worse, I am fine, I am safe, I am smart and successful, I am happy, without any want to investigate how the intergenerational trauma lives on and affects you, or how you may be struggling otherwise. how it makes it so difficult to talk about your own mental health struggles. I’m a generation removed further than robby and to watch this play out in my mom, who has similar mental health struggles to me, but cannot name them, it is hard. and this uniquely Jewish intergenerational trauma is playing out on top of the pre-existing dynamics of mental health has highly stigmatized and unspoken by older generations in general. it is compiling.

Jewish peoples re survivors. we make jokes that every holiday, every significant moment in our history boils down to they tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat! but fuck, it takes a toll.

on a different note do you reckon mel will ever find out about langdon stealing meds like in s3, she’s curious why santos and langdon have animosity towards each other, and one of them fesses up why and includes that langdon stole meds? or it’ll be something she never knows. and do you think her reaction would be if she found out?

I am willing to bet that Mel already knows. The shows portrayal of everyone being shocked is nonsensical.

She'll do research and know that he had access. 2 plus 2. Either she'll ask him to confirm or he'll own up to it himself. Bit I don't see her judging him for it. She'll be disappointed but she's a realistic person.

He's already stepped up for her more than anyone else ever has.

I see her doing the same. Quietly supporting him and making sure he knows he has at least one person to talk to if he has a bad day.

This aspect of this storyline I hate. When medics go through treatment for addiction it is assumed they stole meds.

He was audited. It is known he did. Robby and Santos are unreliable narrators who have been avoiding the Langdon situation. And they have their biases that tilt how they see him. So I take their stance on his treatment with a huge gráin of salt. No one has actually asked Langdon what he said to management.

So I think Mel and Frank will have one of those really honest conversations but she'll treat him no differently.

Of course the hospital and everyone else knows he stole medication. Hospitals cover their ass. So even if he hadn't reported the theft (and I think he did), the hospital would have run an audit.

Robby is rewriting history, and Santos wouldn't be in the loop anyway. And Mel's definitely already heard the rumors, even if she has chosen not to listen to them. She would realize the thefts are a symptom of the addiction, and she'd be kind in talking to Langdon about it.
