The smell of chlorine and heat filled the air in the women’s locker room by the pool. Anna and Klara sat on a wooden bench under the metal lockers, their skin still damp from swimming.
Klara sat on the bench in the locker room. “Oh yeah, I’m tired,” she grumbled. Then she turned to Anna, who was vigorously rubbing her wet hair with a thick towel. Anna hadn’t even changed into her jeans yet, so her incontinence diaper was visible.
Klara paused for a moment, then boldly asked: “Anny, can I ask you something? But promise me you won’t be offended.”
Anna looked at Klara with a conspiratorial smile. “Sure, Klara. What’s bothering you?”
Klara shrugged and continued in a low voice: “It’s just… What’s it like? Having to wear diapers all the time?”
Anna thought for a moment. Her eyes sparkled with amusement. “Actually, it has its advantages,” she said, her face serious, but it soon showed through. “For example, I never have to wait in line for the bathroom when I really need it. I just go to the corner to pee and no one knows.”
Klara burst out laughing. “You’re really crazy, Anna!”
Anna laughed too, her laughter echoing throughout the room. “What’s more,” she continued, “When I go to school, boys look at me, and I know it’s because I look so good in those jeans, not because I’m wearing a diaper… Well, maybe a little bit because of that.”
The laughter grew louder. The two girls leaned against each other, tears of laughter welling up in their eyes. Klara couldn’t even speak anymore.
“Seriously, Klara,” Anna said, calming down a bit, “It’s just part of my life. Some people wear glasses, some people have braces, and I wear diapers. That’s all. And at least you can have a little fun with it.”
Klara put her arm around her shoulders. “You’re the best, Anna. And you’re right, it’s important not to take yourself so seriously.”
The girls laughed for a while longer, then started getting dressed. The locker room no longer smelled of chlorine, but of warmth and laughter.
