A Failed Artist Statement
My story begins as so; I am lying on the ground with no previous memories and I suddenly open my eyes, and all around me is the world. A vast, endless world that I have no way of understanding and describing. Everything around me is unknown, powerful and heavy; enormous. Little by little, I stand up in this madness, I start sensing the existences around me. I start locating myself within these spaces. I still don’t understand but I am becoming familiar. As I grow wandering these spaces I become more complex and I start having desires. One of them is to know, to be able to describe, to decode. I become obsessed with translating everything my surroundings cause me to feel. I try to translate the big world and its impact on a small person. Most importantly, I try to connect. The desire to connect only reveals existing distances. My interest is in these distances but even more in the points in between. The conceptualization of a distance, beyond numbers. The gray areas. The spaces in between that can be dividers or links or both at the same time. When one cannot stand on either end, what occurs? What do we become? What changes? Or is it perhaps an in-between state where the only reality is change? Is it perhaps the only truth we can be in? Are distances vital to comprehending true connection? I ask these questions, but my work tries to do more, it tries to exist amongst these questions, between these distances. I see my art as a fictional character that can escape the constraints and grids of the structured world and thought. My art is a language that no one else can speak and I myself am not fluent in it. But that shouldn’t keep us from not interacting with the things we can’t understand. This is the fun part. Waking up in an unknown world and deciding to explore it and learn from it
