lmao “I wish”
Hey ☺️ I have decided to go to UCSC in the fall (it was my first choice). I even visited today! I want to be at Kresge because I am interested in a career in writing. I wondered if you had any advice or could tell me about the Writer's building. I can't wait to go!
Awesome!
Kresge is super cool. See my last post! Other than what I just posted, the Wrtier's building is a pretty interesting place to be. I personally wasn't in the writer's building, but I knew almost everyone that lived in it, and it's fun to have something to connect to with your housemates. Everyone might have different styles and interests within writing, but you are all wanting to live with other creative people, and it makes for a pretty cool group. Kresge has a Writer's Society that meets weekly (or monthly?) and they do all kinds of cool events centered on writing. Kresge is a cool place to be if you really are interested in writing, and are willing to go to events with other writers! 100% recommend. :)
Hi Anna, my names Geneva and I'm an incoming freshman. I found out today that I'm in kresge (my second choice behind porter) and everything I've been reading about it seems great! I guess maybe of you could tell me about some pros and cons about kresge that aren't as well known? Thank you!
Hey Geneva!
Obviously, being from Kresge I'm a bit biased, but I think it's the best. Porter is rad too, but since you're with Kresge, you'll spend plenty of time in Porter as well. Pros about Kresge: you live in an apartment, which means you have more living space, a kitchen, and a bathroom shared with a few people rather than 30. Kresge is in a great location because you're not too far from anything, but you're set up in the trees, so it's gorgeous. Kresge is not patrolled very much-- you get a lot of freedom and independence living in apartments. No rules, basically! And you get to claim your Kresge affiliation, which is the coolest college to be affiliated with. And you are close to the Owl's Nest Cafe, located by Kresge Town Hall, which is the best cafe that you can use meals at. Plus, you're right next to the trailer park! And trailer park people are rad. Also, the Kresge core class is awesome, way better/easier than other core classes, and you can take an optional 2-credit lab with it like Food and Community which is the most fun way to start off your time at UCSC. Great community, chill people, freedom to do/be whatever you want!
Cons: if you have a hard time meeting people, Kresge can be a little isolating, since you don't live in a dorm hall. That's basically the only con. If you like dorms, you might consider transferring, but if you enjoy your apartment, you'll appreciate not being in a dorm so much.
Like I said though, Kresge and Porter are closely-knit, you'll spend a lot of time in Porter regardless, and you'll meet cool people in both colleges. :)
Hey, I'm Maya! i am really confused about which college to choose. i like Porter but i heard it's hard to sleep there and I LOVE sleep. I like Kresge but I heard it'sm all apartments and I want to try the dorm life at least once. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for helping the newbies at ucsc :)
Hey! It really just depends on whether you get a single, double, or triple room. If you have a single, you probably won't have problems sleeping regardless of being in Porter or not. Same goes for anywhere! Kresge/Porter is where it's at, you can't go wrong. Many people prefer to be in Porter because living on a hall helps you meet a lot of people, but you do run the risk of having a loud hall. Kresge keeps you in an intimate shared space, but there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people there, too.

I noticed you've been answering other people's questions so I decided to ask you a few things too hope that's ok! What are UCSCs social life and night life like? I am confident in its educational value and environment and stuff, but what about the people? What colleges are most prone to partying so I can either go to or stay away from those? Is everyone a pothead like people say?
Totally cool!
UCSC social life / night life is what you make of it. People at UCSC are super nice and fun, and whatever you want to do here, you can. I personally am not really the party-type, but that hasn't made my experience here bad. A lot of people do smoke weed here, but everyone is so nice here that whether you do or don't, no one is going to judge you for it, ahaha. I know people that like to rage every weekend, and I know people who like to just chill. Everything is acceptable here, ahaha.
As far as social life, UCSC has some really crazy events. The trailer park on campus has Trailer Park Olympics, and that is a mess of crazies having insane amounts of fun. Almost every weekend there are big parties and bonfires up in the forest. 4/20 is insane here. People throw a lot of house parties right off campus every weekend, too. And, yeah. Any further questions?
I have a 3.54 GPA, 1700 SAT scores, no grades lower than a C (only 3 grades were ever a C), plenty of extracurricular & jobs during high school, and I was president of a club. What do you think my chances of getting into UCSC are?
I think your chances are super high! You sound like a good student. If you've already applied, good luck! If you haven't, make sure you write interesting personal essays for your application!
Tomorrow, February 15th, is Lena's 20th birthday!
And we're going to the Panic! At the Disco show in Oakland.
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL
In regards to the on campus housing, what is it like? I know each college has it's own theme, but over all are there any that you think are better than others? I've heard a lot about Kresge, Porter, and college 8, what are they like? How are room mates chosen, is there some kind of a survey you take, or is it based on the type if floor you have? I was also wondering if you knew anything about on campus (or easily accessible off campus) employment opportunities that I should take advantage of?
On campus housing is different for whichever college you're with. I'm from Kresge, so obviously I think Kresge's themes are the best, but any of the colleges are cool. Kresge is all apartments and it is super chill. Porter is all dorms and it is a little wild. College Eight is like suburbia. Those three colleges are all next to each other on the west side, too.
When you apply for housing, you fill out a huge application indicating your preferences and such, and they do their best to fit you in a good spot. You can choose to do themed housing, which is different for each college, or not. There are all kinds of cool themes for housing around campus, so there is a place for everyone!
As far as employment goes, there are a lot of on-campus jobs that you can apply for through an online system. I have held two jobs on campus and they have both been great. The campus isn't really in town, so you do have to commute a little to get off-campus, but it's not so bad. Tons of people do it all the time and it's no big deal. Once you are part of the UCSC system, you can access the online system that hooks you up with employment. It's pretty easy, since there are seemingly endless jobs on campus here.
What GPA & SAT scores did you or people you know get in with? What are the dorms like? Best/worst? Roommates? How is the financial aid? Do you think they give a reasonable amount to students in need? How are getting into classes and completing what you need to for your major? What is your favorite and least favorite thing about UCSC? When you were a prospective student, why did you want to go here? Do you think it was the right choice? Know anything about the Biology or Education majors?
I had a 4.3 GPA in high school and I got a 2000 on the SAT. I don't know anyone that I go to school with that has scores that high, honestly. A lot of 1700 scorers and 3.3 GPAs here.
I lived in an apartment as a freshman. Eight people in my apartment, my roommates sucked, but everyone else had good or at least decent situations that I knew.
Financial aid is good. If you are poor enough, you'll get most of your fees covered by the government, which is rad. I come from a very, very low-income family and the majority of my school is paid for by the gov, whatever isn't I take out in subsidized loans.
The really great thing about going to a quarter-system school is that getting done in four years (or less) is what is expected of you, and it's easy to do. Once you have a major plan, you're good! Not too hard to get into classes you need. Advisors are really helpful.
My favorite thing about UCSC is probably the environment. Everyone is so nice and happy in Santa Cruz, the town is great, the redwood trees and views of the beach are beautiful. Everyone is SO NICE here. It's a great place to be.
When I was a prospective student, I wanted to go to UCSC because I liked the town of Santa Cruz but I didn't know much about the school until I actually came here. Honestly, it's the best school I know of, and I don't understand how anyone can choose another school over UCSC. It's beautiful and nice and awesome for academics! It was absolutely the right choice. No doubt.
I don't know much about the Biology or Education majors. I have friends that are Bio majors and they seem to like it just fine. I believe that education isn't really offered as a major here, though. A minor, for sure. And there is a cool grad program for Education. But for undergrad, I'm pretty sure there isn't a major.
I hope that helps! Let me know if you want to know anything else!
Hi there! I was wondering if I could ask you a few things about UCSC?
OF COURSE!
