Buttonhole in garter stitch

For a 2-stitch buttonhole:
👉 Make 3 (yes 3!) backward loops, slip next 2 stitches knitwise one by one, pass first slipped stitch over the second, slip stitch back to left hand needle, k2tog.
👉 You have now bound off 2 stitches but cast on 3❗️On next row, when you come to the buttonhole, knit the 2 backward loops, then k2tog to eliminate the extra stitch.

So you can knit in the round and avoid purling 😉
Some people crochet the edges before cutting, others say it’s not necessary to do anything with non-superwash wool.
But I like to play it safe: sew 2 seams on a sewing machine on either side of the cut with a stretchy stitch (most modern machines have it: the one that sews two stitches forward and one back).
Place a piece of cardboard between the layers before you start cutting! You really don’t want to cut through the bottom layer 😱😱😱
Bonus: You don’t have to weave in all the ends!! ☝️

👉 Insert a crochet hook into the “pocket” that is formed by the loose strands, catch the live stitch. Work your way up, catching each strand in turn and pulling it through from alternating directions to match the knit and purl rows of the garter stitch 😉🧶🙌💪

Try this method to avoid them!
👉 Knit up the underarm stitches. At the body/sleeve junction, pick up 2 loops: one back to front, one front to back, then knit the sleeve sts. Pick up 2 loops the same way and knit up remaining underarm sts.
👉 On the next round, eliminate the extra loops: slip the last st before the junction knitwise, slip the first loop purlwise, knit together through the back loop (improved SSK), then knit the next st together with the remaining loop. (This loop will be twisted, and therefore it may be hard to get your needle into these stitches…) Tighten your yarn. Voilà!

Single-pass brioche
Two-coloured brioche is a 4-row pattern, but it can be worked in 2 rows if you work both colours at the same time 🧶🧶🧶
Light side and dark side rows are confusingly similar, but it helps me to think that if I work a single stitch I should also end up with a single stitch and if I work a double stitch, I should end up with a double stitch.
👉 Hold the knit stitch colour to the right. This means you have to switch the position of the yarns when you turn your work
The best method I’ve found so far for jogless stranded colourwork:
👉 If the last stitch of the round is the same colour as the first stitch of the next round, slip it back to left needle and make a reverse yarn over, slip the stitch back to right needle and work next round.
👉 If the last stitch of the round is not the same colour as the first stitch of the next round, slip it back to left needle and make a yarn over with the new colour, slip the stitch back to the right needle and work the next round.
At the end of the round, knit the last stitch together with the yarn over 😉🙌😎

Mosaic knitting uses slipped stitches to create colourwork patterns. Unlike stranded knitting, this technique only requires working with one colour per row.

It’s undeniably cotton season in this part of Europe, and while cotton is a wonderfully versatile natural fibre, it does have one frustrating disadvantage: the ends tend to poke out after weaving in.
So, I take extra care with cotton ends. As with joining skeins, I cut each ply at a different length while weaving in.
I also check the yarn ends after the first wash and trim or sew in any ends sticking out…

We’re having a very severe heatwave, so it’s time for cotton knits!
Cotton is a very versatile natural fiber, easy to wash and moth-proof, BUT it’s not stretchy and it doesn’t felt. This makes joining skeins and weaving in ends a bit more tricky than with wool.
When joining skeins, I cut each ply at a different length to taper the yarn ends. Tearing or fraying the yarn (as I do with wool) doesn’t really work, nor will the join felt…
It’s more time-consuming than the wool equivalent, but I still can’t bring myself to tie knots in my knitting projects, unless they’ll be completely hidden by a lining or similar…

My top tip for even-tensioned floats in colourwork knitting:
🧶 Knit your colourwork inside out - especially on small-circumference projects like socks or, as shown here, mittens.
A lot of people get confused by this tip and think they have to purl the whole project instead. Not at all! Simply turn your work inside out and knit as normal.
The only difference is that you are now knitting on the inside of the tube rather than the outside.
You won’t be able to admire your work as you go (which is a little frustrating, I know!), but - believe me - it will work wonders for the tension of your floats.

Short rows are an exciting way to shape your knitting project.
The idea is to turn and knit back before the end of the row. This, however, will make a hole at the turning point. There are several methods to avoid a gap.
My favourite is German short rows. They are easy to work and are done the same on knit and purl rows.
Slip the pivot stitch and make a yarn over, all in one movement. Tighten the yarn and knit on. That’s it! 😉🧶

Italian/Alternating cast on lifeline
The frustrating thing when doing the Italian a.k.a. Alternating cast on is that you need to take care not to twist your stitches. If you have a large number of stitches, this becomes difficult. You can weave in a lifeline every 4 stitches when casting on to help you keep track of your stitches 😉
