So this is my Opaque Oil Painting. I found this one much easier to work with than the Transparency one. Obviously because of working with opaque material is more intuitive (for me anyway) than transparents. This was also the first time i ever used oils, and I thought they were much thicker and richer in color than acrylics.
Lovely, nuanced tone from Frank, in this translation of Morandi’s still life, using opaque oil paint application. Tones are a minor chord, all in the mid range
I thought Laura Owens was another artist that made good use of the masking technique. This work in particular i think is excellent. In addition to the masking and shadows adding texture to the work, Owens makes use of depth to make n almost 3 dimensional masking effect, using space as an element.
great example from Frank! The viewpoint is so critical to this work, flowing in and out of legibility, image and language as you move around the gallery space. I actually remember seeing this one at The Whitney
S E P A R A T I O N
One thing Ive witnessed during the pandemic is that plexiglass and propane are HIGH DEMAND. For the plexiglass painting, the first thought has been working at restaurants. I work in a restaurant where there is plexiglass surrounding tables that are less than 6ft apart. In the beginning of the reopening of restaurants, plexiglass was backordered by 3-6 weeks. Management being desperate, they surrounded a host stand with old plastic from the kitchen.
Plexi being a regulation to separate people..I think the most interesting would be the glass surrounding the cocktail stations..it sets a stage for the bartenders making drinks. Gives me like aquarium or zoo vibes. I think I’ll paint something to do with the plexi on the bar…

Plexi painting
this one was coooool. I decided to do some funky beer taps because they've been protected by plexi for all of my jobs.... I feel like my beer taps look like birds But oh well. It was fun to paint. My actual taps are still a bit transparent but I do like how they came out
I love how you personalised it, by using the medium of the plexiglass to talk about your workplace. Has a polished look while still has a lot of warmth in the way its painted - brush strokes etc. I saw you comment how did another student get the colour clocks to be so flat? THe trick is layers! Do many layers of one colour and it will hide the brushstrokes so long as its the same colour. I wonder if the painting would benefit from having a flat background behind everything, rather than the clear. It might tie things more together while still be reflective and plastic looking. Discussion Post: Week 2
In Week 2′s slideshow it discussed archival work. It mentioned how important it is for artwork to be archival so that art enthusiasts or museums can invest in items that can hold the same value years later. This in particular made me think of Banksy. Banksy is a well known artist who keeps himself anonymous which intrigues many. He would randomly graffiti walls of compelling images and refused his art to be sold anywhere even though people managed to. There was one instance though when one of his pieces was up for auction. Once the item was sold, it was shredded. Banksy built a shredder inside the frame in case it was ever sold. This completely defies the idea of archival work. Having his work shredded was thought to now have no monetary value, or did it make it more valuable?

Discussion Post: Week 9
This week I enjoyed talking about collages. There’s something about collages I always found interesting. I think it may be that it’s combining different mediums and gives it this organic meaningful feeling like a scrapbook. Important pieces collected and compiled into one piece.
Paul Anthony Smith’s work in particular I liked. I enjoy how he took a photograph and created a different texture and pattern. It’s very eye catching and keeps your eye moving.

Discussion Post: Week 11
The artist I’ll be talking about is Josef Albers. I decided to choose him because I’ve actually seen his work before at the Princeton Museum. When I first saw it, I didn’t know who had painted it and the actually importance of it. I was confused why blocks of color were something so special. After that weeks lecture I realized it was more than just colors and felt silly. Like most paintings, I think if you have more context on the painting, you will learn to appreciate it more.
I never thought of how certain colors alongside others can really distort your perception. I love how his work plays with this idea and tricks the mind.
Final Paintings
Solid work from Estonia! Your Albers exercises are super successful, I think most found this one quite difficult to achieve so well done. I love how the warm cool invented palette painting took an imaginative turn with this psychedelic night scene, and I love how you used a saturated blue and a reduced blue in the discord painting, it creates a subtle vibration, well done. And finally, the plexi painting is tight conceptually! Speaks so much of our time, and I enjoy the warmth of the handpainted text that replicates a manufactured sign. Bravo!
All semester, I’ve been using this canvas as my trash can. Little ends of left over paint? Add it to the the canvas. I actually like how it came out. I haven’t added anything since the oil paintings because A lot of the green and all the white is oil. The umber was from the drapery painting. The figure reminds me of the sloth from Ice Age! Ha. Now you can’t unsee it! 😂☺️
Oh wow! this turned out pretty amazing. I love the contrast of soft and crisp focus, and the abstracted forms. I can see some early 20th century European influences, including Magritte!!!

The mixing of colours was a bit tedious. Also, trying to accommodate for acrylic drying a different shade when mixing was harder than the exercise I did. Overall, I love result!!! It reminds me of a deconstructed windmill in a field out Midwest!
END OF TERM SHOWCASE
For the second half of the semester, we worked on 4 different projects.
Colour Wheel and Albers Colour Mixing. This assignment was fun and a great interlude into the second half of the class. I am still in shock over the Albers exercises. I did the 2 appears as 1 (yellow) and 1 appears as 2 (red) on one canvas. I then did the ugly colour combination. My colour wheel came out great and was a great reminder of colour mixing, in my opinion.
Warm and Cool Colour Painting. This painting was fun but also a little unsettling. My original colour scheme wasn’t my favourite. BUT I did realize something just look at the two versions again. The purple Medusa appears farther away than the green Medusa. I don’t think I changed their sizes much but I went from a warmer colour to a cooler colour. I like both version but I think my eyes appreciate the yellow/green Medusa more than the purple Medusa.
Abstract Discordant Painting. This painting didn’t come out how I imaged and that is okay. Discords was easy when it was on a small scale just mixing enough to test the discord quality. Mixing discords on a larger scale is honestly the hardest or one of the harder things we did this semester. Once I got out of my head, this painting was less stressful and I got at least one true discord set of colours.
Reverse Plexi Painting. This is my favourite project from the second half of the class. I honestly finished this painting in less than 24 hours over the course of 3-4 days. That’s kind of how excited I got. But I would stay up back 1am and it kind of messed up my sleep patterns. I would painting in reverse on plexiglass again but I would have to get a better handle on creating thin lines with paint brushes. (Really struggled to get a good picture of this! After multiple attempts, I think these are the best three that shows the painting the best!)
Wow. Gorgeous work Astra. Your discordant masked abstract painting came out beautifully - I think there are some really interesting things happening by using shapes lighter in hue (but still discords) and darker in hue (also discords). It has the appearance of shadows being cast, but they dot make sense with the shapes supposedly casting them, all up creating quite a sophisticated visual riddle. Something I can look at for an extended time.
And how fun is your reverse plexi painting?!! Your energey and enthusiasm comes trough in the work. Great use of collaged elements, mixing pattern, texts, cartoon, and abstract geometric shapes and colours. Reminds me a little of Philip guston’s hooded Klan figures, a very dark subject but painted in a comic style, as well as Ned Kelly painted by Sidney Nolan - the hooded bushranger but also the patterning and flattening in the series.
Solid work Astra!!
So for my plexi glass painting I decided create an image that summed up the wild year that was 2020. Basically the moat famous images and terms that I thought related to this year the most were masks, toilet paper, and then fire for the huge dumpster fire that was 2020 in general. I combined the images and created this design. Then while painting it I wanted to test out having one of the elements stay clear so I decided not to the paint the fire and instead paint the background, leaving the flame clear and transparent. Overall this was an interesting assignment and a great way to end the semester.
Ha! This one made me laugh Push. Strength I think its simplicity. I like how the background can change with the wall / light /space behind it. Plexi very fitting for our times!
I finally was able to finish up the shape collage painting. lt was fun to do but also time consuming when it came to the masking. It was worth it though to get the shapes to look crisp, very satisfying. I chose to go dark with my discords and was pretty close to the mark I feel, but maybe should’ve slightly darkerend the tone of the green. I actually really like how it came out and this project.
I know i was encouraging you to make all shapes flat colours, but I love how the transparency of this deep dark blue background works with masked shapes appearing to float on top of it. yes, as you noted, the green could have been a tad darker to be true discord, but I can see you were getting the idea. Great job of the masking!
Plexi Painting Exercise Ideas
I haven’t yet started out painting on the Plexi but I came up with two ideas for what I could do. One I went with a realistic lens and the other I went for a more figurative approach, with that said it can be seen that the first one is more real life image based (which I was thinking I could convert into a cartoon like look) while the other is already more cartoonish based, I like both concepts not sure which to go with though. I think this is going to be really fun to work on once I get to the painting but tedious as well as I maneuver through the painting hopefully not messing up with the whole reverse thing.
Plexi Painting
So here’s a progress post & a final version post in one. The first image is from a few days ago when I started the plexi painting. The second image is from today since I finished it last night. It was actually tedious getting in the black lines first then letting them dry and carefully layering other color over it trying not to mess it up. After that it was just a matter of getting each layer in and letting it dry and so on. I like how it came out, ended up going with the second idea I had as discussed in the last zoom class with the group I was in. It’s more of a deeper social commentary of the times and america over the past 4 years as oppose to being more obvious as I had in my first idea. I thought it would be cooler to do this one as it gets the viewer to sit and think about the deeper meaning which is something I like personally.
Final Research Post: David Gremard Romero
The semester really flew by! So for my last research post same thing happened as did for my last research post. I actually stumbled upon this artist, David Gremard Romero. To my luck he’s a Mexican-American artist! Who would’ve thought/knew I’d end my last post with not just any Latin American artist but a Mexican-American one, full circle really since I started out looking into mostly Mexican artists then branching into any Latin American artist. Lol! Anywho, Romero born 1975 in Los Angeles identifies as a gay, Catholic, Mexican-American artist. From 1996 to 1999 he studied at the Drawing and Painting, Academy of Art College in California and then furthered his art studies from 2000 to 2001 at The Art Institute of San Francisco. He lives and works Mexico City and does paintings, sculptures, textiles, and videos. Romero has had exhibitions in the US, Mexico, Italy, and Singapore.
In his artworks he explores themes of race, sexuality, subjectivity and identity painted in a style that relates to the baroque and rococo periods. All pieces I’ve included here are reverse acrylic on plexiglass paintings with the last two being purely acrylic on plexi but the others being acrylic, gold leaf, silk, and satin on plexi. As described by Romero himself on his current works which I included two pieces here at the end he says “The unifying themes behind my current body of work are Lucha LIbre, or Mexican Free Wrestling, and the confluence of cultures brought about through conquest and emigration in the America’s, both ancient and modern. Masks, capes and tights become important accessories of the luchador as a modern day super hero/warrior. My work deals with the syncretism of lucha libre costumes and pre-hispanic and colonial mythology. The works also touch on the homoerotic connotations of hyper-masculine activities like wrestling and male bonding at sporting events. Most importantly, my pieces bring a contemporary Chicano perspective to colonial painting and the textile traditions of the Americas and to larger issues of multiculturalism, our shared and painful history and to identity politics.” I found his works beautiful and very on topic in relation to our final assignment which was the reverse acrylic on plexi painting and the subject matters relating to the addressing of social issues and or social commentary in a sense to various important themes that relate to him.
I’ve attached his website here at the bottom for anyone interested in checking his work out! This has been an interesting semester, enjoyed it none the less but can’t wait for life to get back to some sort of normalcy (whatever that is now). These research posts have really helped me discover and learn about many incredible artist some which I did not know about so that was cool! The assignments were all pretty fun to work on as well! For this week’s painting I decided to paint characters from the video game Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a new game that came out in March of this year just when quarantine was beginning. This game really helped me get through quarantine by having something to look forward to and a way to connect with my friends. It really helped being able to escape into a virtual world where things were simple as the pandemic was spiraling. For my painting I painted three characters that are my favorites. I had a bit of trouble with it the beginning and had to scratch off all the paint to start over. Getting the very small details was really difficult so I used posca markers for details like their face features and the details on their clothes. All I have left to do is the background which I plan to paint it a mint green with a leaf pattern that is from the game.
Reminds me of Takashi Murakami! These characters are so conducive to the medium of plexi, viewed through screens.... Details are great bianca! well done
