Final Paintings
Bonus Post
So I think somewhere during the painting process, I subconsciously mixed a few discordant colors! I didn't even realize until I was done.... what do you guys think?
Love this, it definitely reminds me of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai
Final Discussion Post
For my last discussion post I wanted to talk about someone who some may not consider an artist but to me is. Linda Miller Nicholson, also known as Salty Seattle on instagram, is an experienced pasta maker who decided to not just make food, but to make art. Her work consists of naturally dyed pasta that is shaped into many different things. When I had first started following her, she created her pasta with beautiful patterns and shapes but now she has begun to share her voice and create pasta with meaning. She’s made portraits of influential people like Ruth Bader Ginsberg to an I voted pasta mask. I love how she uses pasta as her medium for art.
Week 14: Reverse Painting
So for my reverse painting I decided to paint a “Sorry we’re closed” sign. I thought this was appropriate for the pandemic since many businesses had to close, like my own work. I tried my best to clean up the lines of the letters but it was difficult with the brush I had. I also scraped up whatever white paint that was out of line but as I painted the red I noticed the areas I missed. I’m actually not too mad about it coming out the way it did because it gives it a worn down look that fits.
Discussion Post: Week 14 & 15
This week I’ll be talking about Hairy Who’s work. I appreciate how his reverse painting are so crisp and look nothing like a painting. His work looks like a digital graphic without any brushstrokes. As for his style, it makes me really uncomfortable actually and I can’t see how other people enjoy it haha. The photo I’m posting of his work is the one I find the most pleasing to the eye.
For this week’s painting I decided to paint characters from the video game Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a new game that came out in March of this year just when quarantine was beginning. This game really helped me get through quarantine by having something to look forward to and a way to connect with my friends. It really helped being able to escape into a virtual world where things were simple as the pandemic was spiraling. For my painting I painted three characters that are my favorites. I had a bit of trouble with it the beginning and had to scratch off all the paint to start over. Getting the very small details was really difficult so I used posca markers for details like their face features and the details on their clothes. All I have left to do is the background which I plan to paint it a mint green with a leaf pattern that is from the game.
I love this! It looks so clean and accurate. Animal Crossing was definitely the epitome of lockdown
I am terrified to paint on it I don't want to mess it up 😭😭
Can’t wait to see how this turns out!
Week 13: Discordant
I really enjoyed using the masking technique to really capture crisp clean lines. I plan on using this technique sometime in the future. I did notice, depending on the lighting, depends how the photo turns out in white and black and also how the color dries is a factor. I also decided to use only two colors for the shapes since I didn’t realize I had to choose a color for the background too.
Discord Colors in process
I use transparent green as my background color. The main object is an abstract giraffe. However the work is unfinished, and I am thinking about how to make the whole painting more interesting. I mean just a giraffe in the center of the painting is odd.
Really cute painting so far, can’t wait to see when it’s done the colors look great so far
I think adding different shapes on the giraffe that mimic the spots would work, maybe geometric hair or even adding a sun/tree
Geometric Collage Exercise
Here’s different arrangements I came up with for the collage from the first to the last. The last one was more for fun as the image came to me with the shapes (I know we weren’t really suppose to make it a “thing” but I had to as I couldn’t unsee it). For me I’m kind of liking the third one the best of all, perhaps even the fourth. It was a cool exercise overall, it’ll be nice to paint.
Awesome! Love the colors you used!
I definitely see Donald Trump in that last one haha
Discussion Post: Week 13
This week I decided to talk about Robert Minervini’s work. His work is very eye catching to me because it looks like he took photographs of different images and made a collage on photoshop. It looks completely digital. I think it heavily has to do with his masking technique and the airbrushed shadows behind the images. I also love his vivid color choice.
Week 12: Collage
I definitely like the first photo. I like how the shapes form another shape in the middle. It almost reminds me of a picture frame.
Week 11: Albers Exercises
For this exercise, I actually found it quite difficult. The top is two colors appear as one and the bottom is one color appear as two. I think I’ll eventually go back and redo it.
Abstract Paper Collage.
I remember making my first collage in like elementary school, I think. It was blue and green with a theme of the ocean. Why? Well because when I was younger, I wanted to be a Marine Biologist.
Anyway, here at the 4 collages I did with the same shapes. Still trying to decide which one is the keeper!
Option 1: “Mrs. Officer”
Option 2: “Diamond in the Rough”
Option 3: “Inspector Gadget”
Option 4: “Mythical Fantasy”
I love how you accurately titled all of these, they match perfectly haha. I definitely like option 4. It reminds me of an abstract Valentine’s Day card.
Colored Paper Collage
I was inspired by Jean Arp’s artwork so I went forth making these organic and bubbly shapes. After cutting them out, I liked how the shapes seem to complement each others forms (like a puzzle). So I played with that idea on the top two compositions. The right one is separated by color. The bottom right has the shapes touching each other and the shapes look as though they are circulating around the little yellow circle. The bottom left explores symmetry. I believe all of these compositions has a flowy movement to them. But the composition I’ll paint is this one:
I chose this one because it looks like the face of a dog in an abstract way, reminiscent to the style of cubism. Also, I think that the interaction of the shapes work well.
Do you guy’s agree or think another variation works better?
When I first saw the bottom image it made me think of a clown but now I can’t get the dog image out of my head haha. I personally like the top right one, not sure exactly why, maybe because it reminds me of Keith Haring.
Discussion Post: Week 12
This week I decided to talk about Jean Arp’s work. This piece in particular I enjoy since it reminds me of cow or Dalmatian print. I love how organic his work is especially his collages. These collages also remind me of the Rorschach test where there’s a splotch of ink and you interpret what it is. It’s supposed to determine your emotions and personality traits. I think when people view his work they all have many different interpretations.
Week 10: Warm and Cool Color
I went for a night time theme for my collage painting. I wanted the cool yellow to have a neon glow and for the deer to bring warmth.
