Surfing Subculture
The characteristics of my subculture are a beach lifestyle and territorialism where surfers claim certain beaches as their own. There is also specific language, fashion, and music unique to the surfing culture. Surfers have localism meaning they like to pick out favorite surfing spots. Spirituality in surfing is found for some. Sometimes there are early morning services followed by a surfing session. The surfing subculture is a subculture because it pursues the sport of surfing as a lifestyle and priority. It is influenced by beach life because waves are necessary for surfing. Mainstream culture has a relatively positive view of surf culture because of its large impact on youth fashion and music. Some aspects are seen as negative, surfers being viewed as "beach bums" or "slackers" as the surfing culture's emphasis is not focused on achievement or family ideals. This subculture is geographically restricted to beaches where you find waves. Some famous beach culture is found in Hawaii, California, and Australia.
Youth Subcultures: “Festies"- A subculture built around music, specifically electronic music festivals.
People who attend music festivals, a combination of a hippie and a raver, typically interested in the electronic like music.
-Subculture located across the US and in European areas, wherever music festivals occur, popular ones including:
Bonnaroo, Tenesse
Sonar, Barcelona
Glastonbury Festival, Glastonbury
Tomorrowland, Boom
Lollapalooza, Illinois
Electric Forest Festival, Michigan
-majority middle class (able to afford festival tickets and camping/travel), both female and male and many races, age range approximately 18-24.
[Definition from UrbanDictionary.com: Festy: (noun) A person who lives to go to music festivals. A sort of lovechild of a hippie and a raver. Commonly sporting one or two dreadlocks and/or a partially shaved head. Loves face paint, henna, anything glow-in-the-dark, tattoos, music (especially dub step, electronic, indie, folk, alternative), eastern/new age themed religions, hallucinogens and hula hoops. They generally refer to festivals as “home".]
Never heard of the term “festies." That’s pretty interesting. What other subcultures are people participating in?

Tumblr Assignment #2
The graphic describes the millennial philanthropist and fundraiser who uses technology and is invested in volunteering. The article called what is Society? by Molly Edmonds supports the view that Millennia’s use technology and are engaged.

The title of this graphic was: Americans Keeping Informed About Brands Via SocNets. Although this graphic uses youth to define those age 35 and under, I think the graphic speaks for itself, and says quite a bit about differences between the Millennial generation and all other generations. The interesting part of the graphic is that Americans under 35 are significantly more likely to keep informed about brands via Social Networking. In Joel Stein’s article, he makes the statement that Millennials are simply a product of their environment. I think that this is true, however, I think that the relationship between the environment and Millennials is more dynamic than anyone can imagine. In a chicken or the egg situation, this graphic prompts the question in my mind as to whether or not companies are changing because of the Millennial generation—or if the Millennials are adapting to the surge of up-to-date technology. I would be extremely interested in seeing whether these results are applicable to cultures all around the world, or whether or not this graphic is just applicable to American youth. Regardless, I think this shows the relationship between youth and society, and proves that things as simple as marketing can be effected by each generation.

This is a really interesting graph in light of this week’s video Merchants of Cool. What can we learn about the relationship between marketing and youth and society through MoC?

I score a 96 being a millennial. I kind of was surprised at that score I thought I would of scored lower compared to all the results I have seen. Very interesting test to take. And consider.
