So where’s everyone headed next?
The Elephant in the Room
Work is ridiculous, so this is going super slowly. But the semester is almost over and hopefully I will have more time to finish this up over the holiday. I’m trying a new process in which I draw out the shapes before doing the color. I really like breaking up the shape and color process, but it’s slower and it’s new so it’s slower still.
But I know it’ll get faster and overall I think it’ll end up with better illustrations in the end.
It always starts with eyes.
I moved the generator online, so now it’s even easier to play with it: https://www.openprocessing.org/sketch/617407
Next up: being able to save as vector graphics so they are suitable for printing at any size.
I was tweaking my system and added two subsystems: one with a preference towards clustering the flowers together, and one with a preference towards having the visual weight spread across the canvas.
Then I gave one of those subsystems the ability to create a flower if the weight wasn’t balanced, and I ended up with a bit of an arms race in my generator that led to this.Â
I’ve uploaded the system if you want to play with it. I’ve tuned it a bit more so sometimes you get stuff like this and sometimes you get something more minimal. I find it fun to just watch them grow.

I’m not sure who was more surprised when my flower generator made this- myself or this double-monocled bear.
It’s #procjam, so I’m working on a mid-century art style flower generator in Processing. I’ve been super inspired by the work of @lifeasillustrated and so I’m working on creating more stylized output for my generation work.

Mid Century Modern raindrops
I made a quick starter program for some students, and then started tweaking it for fun and in trying to do something else, I ended up with a mid century modern raindrop generator.
I figured out how to export animated gifs from processing and basically I’m sorry for the next year of posts.

Playing around in Processing again, this time growing cities. It’s been done before, and I’m sure it’s been done better, but I’m having a lot of fun regardless!Â
The first photo is after a few seconds, and the second photo is a couple minutes later.
Not sure why these photos look so bad on tumblr. But I think this is my favorite one that’s been generated so far.

I was going to do inktober, but I ended up doing this instead. I’ll probably be tweaking colors on this one for ages, but at least the shapes are pretty much done on the face.
I changed up the colors. Much happier now, and I can get to work on the body.
Finally dipping my toe into Processing. I really should have explored it ages ago, it’s so much fun! This may turn into Gentober.

I always start with the eye(s) because they’re my favorite part. It’s interesting to me how different animal eyes can be.
