UNC Percussion Alum Publishes New Work

UNC Percussion alum Dr. Jason Kihle has published a new work for solo Timpani entitled Barrier. Dedicated to retiring Professor of Percussion Gray Barrier, a 30+ year veteran of the UNC Music faculty, the piece is published by Bachovich Publishing and is available for purchase online.

Dr Kihle is currently Associate Professor of Percussion and Assistant Band Director at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He earned both his Master of Music and Doctoral degrees in Percussion Performance, with a secondary emphasis in Wind Conducting, at UNC.

Congratulations to Dr. Kihle, and thank you to Gray Barrier for his many years of service and mentorship of more than a generation of UNC Percussion students. We will miss you!

UNC Cello Quartet Wins Honorable Mention at MTNA

The UNC Cello Quartet recently represented Colorado at the Music Teachers National Association competition at Wichita State University. Competing against winners from the seven states of the West Central division (Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas) that included top chamber groups from a number of elite music programs, we are proud to announce that the UNC Cello Quartet received an Honorable Mention.

UNC Jazz performs at JEN 2016  

The 2016 Jazz Educators Network Conference took place in Louisville Kentucky last week, and UNC Jazz Studies was out in force for the event. Performances by the Vocal Jazz Lab, UNC Vanguard Combo, Socrates Latin Jazz Orchestra, and the Dana Landry Quartet brought the house down in front of an audience of jazzers from around the world.

Graduate saxophonist Chang Su was recognized as the winner of the David Baker Scholarship Award, sponsored by Jamey Aebersold. Congratulations to Chang and to all the performers at this year’s conference!
