secret reasons
sometimes i agree with a post but i dont like your attitude
They're using Helaena's neurodivergence as a reason to render her a politicaly insignificant oracle. Don't let them fool you.
At Aegons coronation, they erased Dowager Queen Alicent placing her crown on her daughter's head and calling Helaena her queen.
We know that Helaena was happier before she became queen, but that's after Jaehaerys died. Before that, Helaena doesn't express her opinions and feelings on her ascension or the political scenario.
During Blood and Cheese, Helaena offers her necklace for Jaehaerys' life. Her NECKLACE. In the book, she offers her LIFE. They changed so much of the scene, whole characters aren't where they're supposed to be, but they couldn't leave in a line that shows Helaena is willing to die for her LITTLE CHILDREN, like many mothers would, including neurodivergent ones.
In the book, when forced to choose a son to be murdered under horrible threats made to her daughter, Helaena chooses Maelor to die instead of Jaehaerys. It could be because Maelor was younger and didn't have the awareness that Jaehaerys had, but Helaena's choice ultimately prioritises the life of her firstborn, Aegon's heir. It's a political move. In the show, she's so far removed from politics, the only thing she does that remotely comes close is being forced to parade her son's body around the city.
Then, they refuse to let her call Jaehaerys by his name, instead she calls him "the boy", and people argue that it's because she's in shock, but no other character calls Jaehaerys by his name UNTIL Helaena herself says "I'm sad for Jaehaerys but I ought not to. Children die all the time" in the most dismissive way possible. She doesn't ugly cry. She doesn't sob or scream or express her pain. Her devastating grief is conveniently opted out, and episodes later she is ready to be the cryptical catch-you-in-a-lie targaryen oracle. She doesn't ride her dragon to assist the war efforts, not because she's spiralled into depression and what is crudely called madness, but because she doesn't like to ride, as per Rhaenyra, and if she's ought not to be sad, she can't be enraged or vengeful either, because it would be just as inconvenient and wrong, and she's a pacifist with a sensitive soul that shouldn't be corrupted by her evil brother.
An angry mob of smallfolk throws fish at her and Alicent, when she was notoriously beloved by them in the book.
Her authority as Queen Consort is constantly ignored, bypassed and disrespected by her own mother, when Helaena outranks her.
Why is no one campaigning for Helaena to use the power her position gives her?
They made her a vessel for the prophecy, a plot with so many holes it's become swiss cheese.
Not interested in politics? She's neurodivergent. Doesn't offer her life for her children? She's neurodivergent. Is not consumed by grief? Neurodivergent. Doesn't like to fly on her dragon that she claimed at what, eleven years old?
Who knows why.
I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.
It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.

Guys I'm sorry, I know that Peeta reopening the bakery after the war is a very popular headcanon, I can see why and I kind of enjoy reading stories with this hc in it, but realistically I don't think he would do it.
The bakery is the place where he was abused as a kid, the place where his family decided to stay instead of moving out with him to the Victor's village, the place where his entire family was massacred.
I do think he kept baking, that’s canon after all, but not for a living, not as a job. I think at the beginning while they were reconstructing d12 he did bake for the people at the district, but as new people arrived and the bakery eventually reopened he stopped, and only baked for Katniss, Haymitch, and whoever was close to him post mockingjay. He didn't need the money after all, he didn't have the need to take a job that takes so much time and energy.
I do have a headcanon of what he did with his time post canon, though. I like to think he became the art teacher of district 12's school when it eventually opened. Think about it, he's like the only person in the district who had access to art supplies before the war and can paint, not a lot of people in d12 had time for art, so he must be one of the few who can. and he's good with words I can see him as a great teacher
Anyways just my headcanon
it’s weird that professional letters are supposed to start with “dear.” i don’t even call my mom that
my darling hiring manager. my springtime rose. if hired i will bring a strong work ethic to this position
I’m thinking of a heated rivalry au where rose landry is literally just sophie nelisse (as in, all the same projects cough yellowjackets) and when her and shane are together they’re trying so hard to make the relationship work and be In Love while simultaneously both suffering through secret gay situationship hell- shane and rose(/sophie) with ilya and ella purnell respectively
sometimes your distress does indicate you should stop and respect your limitations. at other times it's more of a baby aquatic mammal being introduced to water for the first time thing. Too bad the difference is so hard to tell.
misogyny, heated rivalry, & the complicated process of having an opinion
i've been seeing the discourse on misogyny in fandom spaces (particularly in m/m shipping), and it bled into whether or not heated rivalry is misogynistic fundamentally because of "how it treats women"
and this has led me to really sit down and reflect on what parts are subjected to my own criticism, and which feel null to the conversation
there's is no question women don't get enough stories. that there's a major distinction in marketing something for all and then something for women. that barely any slash works in fandom with women can compare to the monstrous numerical amount of m/m works. that these patterns have begun informing whether the role of the woman should begin to interfere with the story (subjecting her to the backlash of being angry, of being bitter, of being out of control and unlikable) or taking strides in the story (posing her as a storytelling device or 'taking away' the focus of m/m) or have the woman take a backseat for the better flow of the plot (fujoshing out or whatever the fuck they're calling it, basically letting go of complexity or conflict in order to not disrupt the story). these examples are abt m/m stories, because if we talked about a placing that put women in any sort of relational possibility, we can go into making her a "white lamb," a "sexual resource," or quite simply, a "reward"
now, i don't think i slack on pointing out shows' weakness in how they write women. partly because im a woman, partly because i grew up surrounded by badass, highly educated, highly successful women who prove new things to me every day, and mostly because i have a strong grasp in my roots with feminism, intersectionality, and the ability to find them in everything
heated rivalry, i think, cannot fit the bill of considerations for the show to be whole heartedly graded for its ability to write women. i think Yuna is a good, strong-headed mother with a clear character voice. i think Svetlana has a complex and muddled air around her, much like the majority of Ilya's life and character backstory. i think Rose is a story device to explore Shane's sexuality, which portrays a very true and painful reality for people that are dealing with internalized homophobia in trying to fit themselves in.
could these women have rage? could these women have different, more angry, or more sad, or more joyous reactions? is the true criticism not about the emotion, but the active verb of not having a bigger weigh in the story?
i think it's good to point out Svetlana had every reason to be more active, if not for the fact that Ilya appears in an emotional state (through the majority of the series) that has him incapable of being open with his interactions with anyone, including himself. Shane doesn't talk to his mother because that requires him to come out, which makes a wall against vulnerability. Rose is the first person Shane comes out, and is the first person to offer explicit kindness to him as a fully-officially-out-loud gay man. so all of these women are present and character developed and play a role in the story, but are unable to offer bigger roles (like all other characters) because of Hollanov's inability and refusal to open up
so in this case, structurally, and in regards to the inner struggles of the main characters and the arc of the plot of the first book/season, i find myself at a loss in what exactly was done wrong. and i don't just mean the fact that "it's not on the page." i think oftentimes, we get stuck on saying what we could change within the pages, when really, authors and directors have creative freedoms. they chose that arc, they chose those characters, they chose those decisions and settings and situations. what i mean here is, what could have really been useful in a female character's role and weight in the story, that didn't radically change the biggest aspect that stopped and then allowed Hollanov's relationship?
i couldn't find any. there weren't crazy mistakes done by women. and i think, you know, these women are empathic towards these men they have great affection for. and in this case, i think the reactions fit themselves as good enough?? like, do i think heated rivalry has a strong female character?? no. but also it's a romance, and both leads are men because it's an m/m romance. i could say they're well voiced, well developed, and i think importantly, fairly interesting. i, at least, cared about them more that hayden pike (though i love him anyway, no hate pike)
i dont mean to say that this isn't a very real, very necessary conversation over our expectations from creators (in producing or writing or fandom spaces in general). i can admit that in fandom, i dont really engage with f/f shipping, despite being a queer woman. in private, i write female queer love stories. i write poetry to women. i had a very sad valentine's day because i'm going through that best-friend-but-maybe heartbreak. and yet, in outside spaces, i appear to be a yaoi driven freak. i'd like to do more auto-reflecting on that, and i think it's good to question myself over these positions. but in the few rage posts i've seen over hr, i think i'm going to say to this unprompted vent to the void the following — yeah, i don't agree with that one
now, i want to end my lil set of thoughts with another case study i think would be really interesting to me. i've been watching Hannibal with a friend and while i adore him and the show, the women are so terribly written that i crash out. the first three episodes of season 1 were basically me ripping it apart every two minutes. and yet, i find the show charming and WEIRD and very very gay. this, i think, makes for a much more interesting conversation about the limitations "queer" when observing the attributes that are undermined by its misogyny. hannigram continues to be one of the top ships here on tumblr (I CAN'T WAIT TO FINISH S3 AND DIVE INTO FANFICS) and i think that's a good place to continue my reflection lmao
so in conclusion, think critically, question yourself, and above everything else, remember your pride. proud to be queer. proud to be a feminist. proud to give a fuck. okay im going to bed it's 4am!!
sometimes i catch myself wondering “why did [author] [make x decision]?” and that encourages me to believe i may be on the path to becoming a better writer
@stupidgayhobbit if you don’t mind, I’m going to put forth my personal theory for one of these tags that caught my eye! Specifically your pondering on why Suzanne Collins eliminated religion from Panem!
In terms of its impact on the narrative: In my opinion, it was likely because religion gives people hope in something higher than the life they’re currently trapped in. Most religions widely practiced today, build faith in a peaceful heaven-like place after death or the promise of continued life through concepts like reincarnation. Furthermore, religion at its best can inspire the possibility of building a more heavenly world here in the present.
Similarly, religion puts something (assumedly a deity) above the power and will of the Capitol. Without it, the highest power the people know is that of the Capitol! There is nothing higher they can hope in for salvation!
Religions also tend to have representatives on earth (ex. Priests and Pastors) which is another group of influence that the Capitol wound need to manage and control.
Basically, religion is dangerous to the Capitol’s carefully crafted oppression of the districts.
In terms of an in-universe explanation for religions absence: Our current modern society is less religious than periods past and that trend seems to be continuing for the most part. (don’t get me started on why gen-z men are turning to religion in crazy numbers). So it makes sense that several centuries in the future when we get to Panem that it’s religion might have faded in popularity and not have carried on into the time of our story! There are hints of it (Katniss references “the heavens” in THG and the repeated mentions of a sweet old hereafter) but it’s treated as a thing of the past for the most part.
Anyway…sorry for hijacking your post friend! My brain started running away from me before I could stop it! 🤣
Peeta: Life could be worse, Haymitch.
Haymitch: Life could be a lot better too.
I think one of my favorite things about the SOTR epilogue is that the ONE new piece of Peeta lore we got is he knows how to build shit 🛠️
