grandad will always be there....
For years, whenever I’d go on streetview for my grandma’s address, there’d be a photo of her tending to her rose garden. She’d had that house since the mid ‘70s, and she loved her garden so much. I always thought it was so cool that it was out there for everyone to see, my grandma working away. Because that’s how we knew her and that’s how we’d often find her, poring over those roses. She was so proud of that garden.
My grandmother passed away last year, after a long bout of illness, and I was there for all of it, from when she was doing okay until she started deteriorating and eventually died. During that time I lived with her in her house and looked after her, day and night. When it got too bad for me to handle on my own, my dad took time off work and was there with me for that whole summer. Eventually she was moved into a care facility, and because of the Covid pandemic, visitation was tough. It was one of the most difficult times of our lives, and to this day we’re still grieving, but my dad and I also bonded in a big way over it.
Before and after Grandma died, my dad, my stepmother and I worked our asses off to keep her garden looking beautiful. We would take pictures to show her the pretty flowers at her hospital bed, even if she was too out of it to know what she was looking at. But on the rare occasion that she was lucid enough to see properly, she really appreciated it. She would even give pointers on how to tend to the roses, if she was feeling up to it.
I clipped off some of the dahlias that I had grown over that summer, to lay on her grave.
Seeing this post made me look up her address on google street view again, just to see if she was still there. She’s isn’t there, because they’ve updated it recently… but instead, there is a picture of my dad and I, toiling away in the garden just like Grandma used to. Keeping her garden beautiful, keeping the roses alive. In a way, that’s kind of poetic.
