Canines for the Mind by Scarlet Clark

1 in 4 people will experience a mental health condition in the UK. Mental ill health causes about 40% of all days lost through sickness absence in the workplace and costs employers 26 billion a year in total. Mental illness is one of the most deadliest and prevalent conditions to live with. So why are the resources for this medical condition so limited and, recently labelled, “unacceptable”?

In the UK, over 7,000 disabled people in the UK rely on an assistance dog to mitigate their disability whether for mobility, hearing or sight. Additionally to their specialised training, these dogs provide their handler with unrivalled emotional support. Many studies have shown that dog owners had higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of depression, dogs reduced blood pressure more than specialised medication and having your dog in the room dramatically reduced your heart rate. But we don’t need hundreds of studies to show that 1500 plus years of partnership between human and canine does not enrich human life.

Canines for the Mind (CfM)  is An up-and-coming non-profit organisation aiming to train dogs in assisting people with mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, bipolar and PTSD. Despite its prevalence in America and other European countries, there are no such organisations helping the thousands of people with invisible disabilities here in the UK. Canines for the Mind is therefore facing many hurdles. Currently we are working on charitable status and becoming members of ADUK (Assistance Dogs UK) and ADI (Assistance Dogs International). This will be a lengthy process and also a costly one.

The dogs that are selected to train will hopefully originate from rescue centres and then go through extensive training to pass the very rigorous ADI Public Access Test. These dogs then not only provide companionship and emotional support for their handlers but can also be task trained for a variety of different purposes such as: disrupting harmful behaviour, alerting to panic attacks, leading handlers out of stressful situations, retrieving medication, physically grounding handler with bodyweight and responding to discreet cues in order to remove handler from a situation or providing more space.

To raise awareness of our aims for Canines for the Mind’s future, my dog Wilkie and I have been trotting about campus and offering his services as a “Student Stress Relief Dog”. Other universities have been offering similar ‘Dog Therapy’ events, so we decided to go freelance. If you see us about, please feel free to say hello and give him a hug and receive a free face lick or ten! We’re also fundraising for Veterans with Dogs, the first charity training PTSD dogs for UK veterans and with whom we’re building a good rapport with. If you’re feeling particularly less poor, any help would be much appreciated.
