Snort.
"Smoke us? Who, you and, what, the frog?" A loud crackling laugh stained by cigarettes and whiskey-borne acid reflux.
"I've got a bowl that's rigged, yeah. Not gonna tell ya which of the four it is, though." A warm snicker. "Promise a bullet won't shoot through ya, though... I swear.'
Fox smirks haughtily.
“Yes, me and the frog. And the bird. Sky’s not the only place we reign supreme.
“Oh, I believe you. Pranking me in front of your lackeys would make better spank bank material than just offing me.”
AS SAID BY COMMANDER SHEPARD * assorted dialogue from the mass effect trilogy
it's a big stupid jellyfish.
i don't know what i'd do without you.
you're working too hard.
i'll let you get back to work.
i'm sorry, i'm getting a lot of bullshit on this line.
if i'm walking into hell, i want someone i trust at my side.
oh, now it's personal.
you think we're going to lose?
you'll never be alone.
no matter what happens here... you know i love you. i always will.
i haven't forgotten our time together.
i want you. i want someone i can trust.
i don't know what we're gonna find in there, but i'm not going to lie to you. it's not going to be easy.
i've had enough of your snide insinuations.
it's all just part of the job.
i'm getting a little worried about you, [name].
this shop discriminates against the poor!
consider me officially offended.
you know, [name], if you're not comfortable with this, it's okay. i'm not trying to pressure you.
when should i book the room?
can one of you clarify?
they want to know what we're made of? i say we show them, on our terms.
i should be going.
it's been a long journey, and no one is coming out without scars.
i guess i'm on my own. again.
you don't need to hurt him to get what you want.
you have got to be kidding me.
if i didn't have authorization, how did i get in? you see any other doors?
make me proud. make yourselves proud.
what's that you're drinking?
i just saved your ass.
be alive with me tonight.
sometimes things don't work out the way we'd like. that's just life.
i'm the only thing standing between you and a hole in the head.
i don't argue with plants.
[name], this doesn't have to be hard.
get the hell off my ship.
are you naturally this bitchy, or is it just me?
what are we going to tell them? i had a bad dream?
good times are over.
it's not too late. you don't have to go through with this.
one way or another, we're taking this bitch down.
i told them where to shove it.
you getting soft on me, [name]?
we could test your reach... and my flexibility.
this war has brought us pain, and suffering... and loss.
i assume everything's going well up here?
i don't know what drugs you're on, but stay back and i won't shoot you.
i thought you were a friend of mine. you've got the same suit.
sounds like he needs to get shot.
i've been getting that a lot.
look around you. you're not in this fight alone.
i don't have time to babysit you, [name]. find a way to deal with it.
have you got a minute to talk?
here i am. exactly where i want to be.
never hesitate when you've got the enemy in your sights.
give me what i want. now!
lay it on me, [name]. i love bad news.
i should go.
hell, [name], you were always ugly.
i hadn't heard that. is there anything i can do?
someone piss in your coffee today?
how do i shut this thing up?
i can't promise how things will work out... but i missed you, [name]. i thought about you a lot.
everything we've ever known... it's all hanging by a thread.
something on your mind?
maybe you're right. maybe we can't win this.
keep it up, tough guy. you'll leave in a bag.
you kill people because you think they're beneath you; they're in your way. i kill people because they leave me no choice.
i don't know if i'll be coming down here for these talks anymore.
can we ever be ready for a battle like this?
“So how does Sargasso usually get down for spooky season?
I mean you guys already look the part so I’m sure costumes are no issue…”
(From Fox 🎃)
"Har-dee-har-har."
"We always deck Sargasso out for the holidays; I got cobwebs and holiday streamers, there are jack-o-lanterns on the tables... ya get the idea. We keep a couple of bowls of candy around the bar on Halloween night, and I sporadically play Halloween music on the week leading up to the 31st. Why? You wanna do the timewarp with my boys?"
"...Or will ya be too busy trick-or-treating?"
His muzzle twitches. Touché.
“And pass up the chance for my team to smoke ya’ll on the dance floor? No way!
…Those candy bowls aren’t rigged, right?”
go! i'll fight them off! get to safety! [for Diamant please; I missed you lots! Hi again!]
A near-miss from a searing fireball had broken his focus for an instant; long enough for a Corrupted brute to land a crippling blow.
His world turned sideways, Diamant's pulse pounded in his ears. Each breath was like a lance through his chest. But when an alabaster figure came running to his defense, so too did the Prince’s resolve return.
"D-Divine One," he choked out, pushing himself off the ground. His stomach lurched with every movement, and his dominant arm hung uselessly at his side. But he wouldn't dare leave the side of the one he’d pledged his sword to.
"No...not without…you!”
OOPS! ALL ANGST! PROMPTS * assorted dialogue, adjust as necessary
when were you going to tell me the truth?
so you're telling me everything has been a lie.
i never should have trusted you.
you've done nothing but lie.
i had to make you believe me in order to get you to come.
there's nothing you can do for me now.
go! i'll fight them off! get to safety!
i'm done with this place.
we were never meant to be together.
there's nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.
i put my faith in you, and this is how you repay me?
you should have known better than to trust me.
is that all this is? a ploy? a game? is that what i am to you?
you've been playing with my heart this whole time.
was any of it real?
i'm never coming back here again.
i have a message from your father.
you were a waste of my time.
so that's it then? you're leaving?
we always knew this was a one way trip.
it's been an honor serving with you.
how long have you known?
did you ever love me? i mean really love me?
they made me a better offer.
it's not my fault you fell in love.
i need you to promise me you'll do everything in your power to fight.
what are you talking about? i'm not leaving you here!
there's nothing we can do now.
it's useless to try and fight.
i always thought there was more to you. turns out i was wrong.
you betrayed me for nothing.
you made me a promise.
it's no use. i've tried everything.
i can't believe you fell for that.
everything you've ever known is a lie.
do you want to hear what really happened?
i should have told you this a long time ago.
you're going to want to sit down for this.
i'm not sure you're ready for the honest truth.
i have a message from your mother.
get out of my house!
i'm never speaking to you again.
i'm not going to repeat myself.
i told you to never contact me again.
i warned you this would happen.
you're really good at fucking things up.
don't worry. you'll never hear from me again.
you were wrong about everything.
you already missed your chance.
i never asked for much.
i've loved you since the day we met.
i don't want you to be here when it happens.
you're such a disappointment.
i can't go on without you.
you have ruined my life!
we should run.
Emerald eyes study Wolf keenly, and he lowers his own glass mid-sip.
“Sounds like him. Would probably teach you all his tricks, like he did for Krys.”
Fox huffs through his nose, considering his thoughts.
“But your crew’s not going anywhere. Wingmates are sticky like that.”
Brow snakes itself upwards, creeping along his forehead wearily in response to the vulpine. He considers the nasally huff. Did Fox find humor in that statement? Or... was he destressing?
"Leon ain't goin' anywhere, at least."
Fox lets his eyes drift down; perhaps he obscured the assurance in his words a bit too well. So goes the trials of parleying with Wolf.
"Not surprised about you and Leon. But I wouldn't count Panther out. The flighty ones can surprise you the most."
His lips quirk up. "And for the record...I think Star Fox could've been a good fit, once upon a time."
"...Had a nightmare that Leon and Panther died... Peppy felt bad for me and offered me a spot on Star Fox because he knew I'd self-destruct if I was alone.
Fuck..."
Emerald eyes study Wolf keenly, and he lowers his own glass mid-sip.
“Sounds like him. Would probably teach you all his tricks, like he did for Krys.”
Fox huffs through his nose, considering his thoughts.
“But your crew’s not going anywhere. Wingmates are sticky like that.”
starwolfslippy:
“Wait, we built Starfo-?!” The sudden noise of the explosion halted the toad’s shocked sentence as he let out a yelp and was now covering his hooded head with his hands. He can feel his heart pounding and racing as things felt much too fast. He felt that the air was a bit thinner than before as panic flooded his senses.
Slippy’s eyes went wide, staring at the vulpine’s hand, his head running like gears. “But..” Starwolf never hurt him. They healed him up and let him stay. The amphibian felt too attached to leave. But…he’ll know more about himself. And Fox McCloud, someone he feared by name, someone who he was convinced that he would be vivid with the mechanic, didn’t seem so scary. In fact, there was something about the leader of Starfox that soothe him somewhat, and had a sense of familiarity.
He never felt so torn, nor had he ever felt such suffocating fear about what will happen after. Moments passed as he finally had the strength to talk again. “You…Can you promise to take me back..?”
“Yes Slip, I promise with all my heart to take you home, nowhere else.” Fox tried his best to raise Slippy’s spirits, even as their window of escape grew ever narrower. He let his hand drop back to his side, deciding he shouldn’t press his anxious friend further.
“I’m going to send out a signal that’ll call the Great Fox to Sargasso,” Fox explained, turning to retrieve his discarded vizor. “Once it arrives, my Arwing will launch towards our position. We’ll have to find a safe place for it to land if we wanna make it out of here.”
The leader of Star Fox hesitated, his finger hovering over the button that would put the final phase of the plan into motion. Emerald eyes turned to rest on Slippy, looking so small and uncertain beneath his cloak. The sight was enough to form a lump in Fox’s throat, which he hastily forced down. If there were ever a time he had to be strong for his comrades, it would be now.
Click.
The Great Fox called, the pilot’s face disappeared once more behind his mask. “Listen to me, Slippy; Star Wolf will definitely discover my presence here soon. We need to start moving, now.”
Fox had taken a few steps towards the door leading out of the Mechanical Unit. He stopped, reaching back out to the friend he’d thought he’d lost to the fire.
“Please,” he implored.
Staring at the vulpine as the sirens kept wailing, he never felt so torn. Slippy can hear his mind screaming at him to run away, that this whole thing was crazy, like jumping into a tank full of piranhas. He must be insane to go with him.
Well, he must be crazy then. Grabbing the vulpine’s hand and following him to wherever they’re going, Slippy looked out at the window. Woah, what a big ship! Is that the Great Fox?
The mechanic didn’t know why he’s doing this. He likes being in Starwolf. But for some reason, he just reached out. His instincts seem to be on the vulpine’s side, and maybe he could know more about his past. He can still feel his thoughts screeching at him fearfully though.
He hopes that he isn’t walking to death’s door.
Something in Fox’s chest loosens as Slippy places his hand in his. Relieved, Fox squeezes his friend's hand and leads him out the door.
Their forms are awash with the strobing emergency lights. As they pass the large window, Fox spares a glance to his command ship; their shining sanctuary floating just out of reach. But the merc is confident in its ability to withstand Sargasso's onslaught; it will give his remaining team room to guard his Arwing on its path to meet them.
Fox follows his vizor's map to what he hopes will be their salvation: a maintenance bay hidden within the shadowy recesses of the space station. Spotting the unassuming door up ahead, Fox releases Slippy to pull the metal panes just far apart enough for them to squeeze through.
“In here!” He pulls his friend inside with little preamble, slamming his paw on the lock. The blaring alarms were swiftly muted, leaving the two in the dimly-lit maintenance area. The place is even more cramped than Fox anticipated; pipes and vents line the walls and cross just above their heads.
Fox carefully steps deeper into the room, descending a small flight of stairs before reaching the sealed access door that led outside. He huffs in dismay before turning to a rack where a few work vests are hanging. The vulpine rushes over and begins turning out their pockets like a man possessed.
"Aha!" He just struck gold; a careless worker left behind their keycard, along with a folded sticky note containing a scribbled passcode.
"Come here, Slippy," he calls to the toad as he whirls to a nearby console. Scanning the keycard, he unlocks the screen and types in the code with bated breath. He nearly pumps his fist when the door controls appear, and he wastes no time opening their escape route.
"We're nearly home free!" Anticipation surges through Fox, tingling to the tips of his ears. His eyes are locked on the inky darkness just beyond the shielded opening, hoping to catch a glimpse of his trusty Arwing.

Clovis stands tall as he leans against a nearby wall inside of the H.E.L.M. He grows bored of the mundane routine of staying in the ship and being so... Alone. He is sick of it. It drives him mad. To tears, even. So on an official Vanguard business (so much for hospitality...) Clovis is going to be taken to the Last City to be given a tour. He has read all of the reports he could access and finds the status of humanity rather... Disappointing.
He is busy typing away a few last minute details for the days work as his guide transmats into the H.E.L.M. He looks up from his work and blinks at them. He wonders if that's his guide or perhaps someone simply making an errand run.
"A market ??" His tone of voice has a hint of curiosity in it. "That would be a good start to see the Last City." In truth, Clovis was already made aware of the dire state the City is in. Seeing the bunkers that were meant to house weapons and Warmind fragments has him questioning so many things at once. As the two are transmitted into his ship, he desperately wants to ask questions but waits for now before asking them. He would hate to seem like such a... Tourist.
As the two fly near their destination and transmitted to the designated landing zone, Clovis looks down at himself for a moment and then back around him. "How does anyone get used to that ??" The Exo shivers for a moment as he takes in the bustling City life. It's... A shock. He is used to everything being so... Different. He's been asleep for centuries and it still feels like he has just woken up. He has no memory connection to his original frame and this is all a bit overwhelming. It is as if he has stepped into a sci-fi film and he is a simple background character. Not an ideal start but it will do for now. Best to see the City first hand before being bombarded with questions of the Golden Age.
Clovis seems to be more like a child at an amusement park for one moment then a horror house the next. His Drone pops put and records videos of anything it can. In all honesty, it looks as if he is a kinderguardian taken into the Last City for the first time.
Gryphon is decidedly more relaxed when the two touch down on Midtown's transmat zone. The sky is overcast, with a light flurry of snowflakes descending between the buildings. But the brisk chill does not deter the district's denizens as they amble down the winding streets.
The warlock watches Clovis curiously, taking note of the open wonder on the other’s face. It was a most unexpected sight; he’d expected Clovis to regard the City with little more than a haughty sneer.
Beckoning with his hand, Gryphon steps forward to join the passing pedestrians. “Come, the market is a little further down the road.”
Following the flow of foot-traffic, the air is sweetened by the sounds and smells of the bustling market. Arriving at the open boulevard, the Exos discover the space lined with brightly-colored canopies. The people's spirit is similarly vibrant as they admire and chatter over the offered wares.
Following his nose, Gryphon approaches a vendor selling stuffed buns nearly bursting with savory filling. He purchases two and offers one to the other Exo; a gesture of burgeoning hospitality, perhaps. "To stave off the cold."
Looking down the length of one of the wider alleys, Gryphon spots the looming facade of the ruined Tower. It stands lifeless, shored up by scaffolding and stabilizing cables. He motions to Clovis so that the other can observe it for himself.
“That is the original Tower. It was home to the Vanguard for many years before the Red War. It sustained significant damage during the invasion, so we were forced to move our base of operations to a new space along the Wall.”
Gryphon takes a bite of his bun, ruminating as he chews. “It has yet to be fully rebuilt. In fact, the same can be said for many of the decimated districts. Supplies are not always plentiful and must be rationed to maintain our defenses."
❝ Diamant, ❞ Alear began as he approached. Thankfully, the manakete was aware of the particular reason why this day was special, and he considered it part of his duties to acknowledge them to keep morale high. With that said, he had gone out of his way to select a decent gift he thought the Brodian prince would like. Handing him a well-cared for, old-looking history book that looked as though it came from a second-hand bookstore, Alear gave him a smile, ❝ I hope this gift is to your liking. Happy birthday. ❞ Although the appearance of the text wasn't well esteemed, he hoped that the pages would speak their value for themselves—the seller had told him that book was one of a kind.
The surprise coloring Prince Diamant’s face gave way to abashed laughter as he took the gift from the Divine Dragon’s hands. “I am truly humbled, Divine One. You shouldn’t have troubled yourself over my birthday, of all things.”
The tome’s binding was aged but firm beneath the prince’s fingers. Its title was written in a dialect that had fallen into disuse, but that was no deterrent. In fact, a desire was sparked within Diamant to pour through the work and decipher the history recorded on each page. “How intriguing! I haven’t dedicated myself to a book like this since…”
The crown prince traced the faded maroon cover of the book he'd pulled from the library's towering shelves; the memoirs of an avid adventurer who’d journeyed to the farthest corners of Brodia.
In this tranquil corner, the royal family took refuge around a glowing hearth. At the upright piano sat his mother, guiding young Alcryst’s fingers along its keys as they played a familiar melody. His father rested beside him on the sofa, pouring over the latest field reports from the front. The King had elected to attend his paperwork outside the confines of his study that evening; Diamant was exceptionally glad.
Turning eager eyes back to his book, the prince flipped the browned pages open to the introductory passage. After an arduous day of honing his body on the training field, he yearned to escape into the whimsical accounts of the land he called home.
Alas, it was partway through the second chapter that Diamant’s eyelids grew heavy with the day’s labors. As hard as he fought, the fire’s warmth and the piano’s dulcet tones only hastened his surrender. His head tipped sideways to rest upon a sturdy shoulder, and he sank deeper into sleep's embrace as a calloused but gentle hand carded through his hair.
Diamant gazed down at the weathered tome in his hands; its cover blurred in and out of focus. When at last the prince lifted his eyes to Alear, they shone with deep gratitude and something a touch more pained.
"…Thank you, Divine One. This gesture means more than I can say."
The Divine Dragon's offer pleased the prince as much as it relieved him. To lose Alear's favor would not only be a tremendous blow to Diamant personally, but to the kingdom that now rested on his shoulders.
"It would be my pleasure to join you, Divine One." He dipped his head in gratitude. "And a quiet meal outside the café does sound appealing."
Truly, Diamant enjoyed spending time with their colorful cadre of allies. But his throbbing skull could only endure so much these days, and their usual antics were beginning to vex him more often than not.
Glancing up, Diamant took a moment to observe the twilit sky. A handful of stars now glimmered in the inky expanse overhead. "Prince Fogado and the others should be about finished by now. I didn't catch sight of what they were all preparing, but it smelled heavenly.”
The prince lowered his gaze to meet Alear's, an idea in his smile. “How about you tell me your preferred dining spot, and I’ll bring the food over. It would be no trouble for me,” he assured, his chest puffed out just a tad.
There was no way he could hide the happiness he felt when Diamant accepted his offer, the glimmer in his eyes almost returning to their usual shine. While he had only suggested eating somewhere other than the café to be open-minded, he hadn't thought they'd actually consider the option. Then again, with how often the café tables were empty and no shortage of eyes that would linger upon him and any dining companion he may have invited, Alear supposed that eating somewhere else was in their best interest. And that would be when the negativity began to resurface again, with his smile slowly falling as more and more unpleasant considerations surfaced.
He did not want to deal with the stares from across the room at this moment, not when he was still so emotionally distraught and unable to hide it. It was tiring enough to keep his farce up for Diamant alone right now. Honestly, the more he dwelled on this, the more he wanted to retreat to his room for more alone time (to drown in the abyss of whatever mess these painful recollections gave him), but he couldn't rescind his offer now.
Glancing out across the various parts of the Somniel he could see from this lookout ridge, Alear could not find a satisfying place to possibly dine. Outside simply wasn't private enough—anyone could intrude just like how Diamant had done so now. With his mood like this, he couldn't afford another walk-in on a moment of vulnerability.
He thought of voicing part of his earlier line of thinking but the rumors that would result... might get out of hand due to the nature of such a request, especially since it involved the man who would soon take the crown and officially done the title of king at this late hour. Even if his request was made of innocence, not everyone would see it that way. As much as his room was a sacred altar, it was still, in fact, a barely furnished bedroom.
❝ I... don't really have anywhere in mind, ❞ he sullenly answered as he returned his gaze to meet Diamant's orange-y red irises, not willing to give out the ideas he had come up with internally. Awkwardly placing a hand to the back of his neck, he tried to at least give some semblance of criteria for them to discuss a location, ❝ I'd like to eat somewhere a bit private, but not much is coming to mind. ❞
Maybe throwing the idea to Diamant would help ease the burden on his shoulders. He already seemed proud to do something for him right now, so a little addition of suggesting where to eat wouldn't be too much, right?
❝ Is there anywhere in particular you would want to dine together? ❞
Diamant watched Alear carefully; this troubled indecision was unlike him. He’d expected the other to share the existence of some nook tucked away on the island, hidden from outsiders’ eyes. Was Alear still toiling over whatever had pained him before?
The prince was just about to speak up and politely release Alear from his invitation when their eyes met once more. Diamant furrowed his brow a bit, puzzled by the Divine One’s deflection but eager to provide suggestions he hoped would placate the other.
"Somewhere private," he murmured, bringing a hand up to his chin. “The gazebo or the orchard would be my first choices. The orchard especially is pretty secluded. Most everyone will be eating in the cafe, so I doubt they’d stray from the plaza.”
Diamant stiffened as he realized the likely culprit behind the Alear's unease. He shouldn’t have been so naive as to forget the optics of such a rendezvous. Something as innocent as breaking bread between friends could be construed much differently in the critical eye of the aristocracy.
And as much as it shamed him, Diamant could understand the Divine One’s hesitance. Lythos had been the cornerstone for peace and stability in the world for the past millennium. It wouldn’t do for its regent to associate too closely with a kingdom that played a hand in upending that peace.
The prince took a few steps closer to Alear, lips pressed into a hard line that betrayed his resignation. "Divine One, are you worried about...about being seen dining together?" he asked in a decidedly spiritless tone.

Elyos may be fraught with hardships, but Diamant is infinitely grateful to have been born into this world.
